Trade Sparks for D depth and keep Goat and Holl. Depth is everything in playoffs.

You aren’t wrong on the depth, I just don’t see goat or Holl making are roster of the start and now with the accusations of Harper/spezza/shore/Adam McQauid(if he signs) Holl wouldn’t be needed and goat doesn’t fit our system, I like goat and bill but I would rather a vet who is good on draws and can help our young team develop with everyday nhl life style, I’m not saying he’s the captain but will be a leader in the room for the leafs

43 + 44 Seasons wont bring you Kerfoot for 2,7M even on bridge.

You are correct about Holl and Gauthier, but you are forgeting Dubarelli grew up with Marlies and rose his first Cup with them....he cares about Marlies as much as for TML so he will keep those guys to play in minors.....

Using the name Dubarelli, just torches all your credibility. Dubas is doing amazing as GM.

I will stick to it till Matthews wont go to ARI after the shortest contract for Fan-base-wants-him-to-be-but-himself-doesnt franchise player ever signed in history of NHL.

Lets see how 40M for "Core 4" will make you great in D department.

Already looks pretty good this coming year with more time for Liljegren and Sandin to develop more.

If you guys are ok wih one year of "things looking good", sry, im not. Even in RL i dont live from hand to mouth but i do things long term backed with strategy factor.

Ive seen to many "things looking good this year" since i came over with Sundin......

If Barrie rental and one year of Ceci instead of 5 of Zaitsev ( who i think is better player then Ceci, regardless of all corsis and other analyst stats, while i rely on my eye-sight ) gives you comfort, then its ok.

Ceci has a chance to rebuild his stock in TO, Zaitsev wanted out. As for Barrie, there is of course the chance he is resigned. I completely agree on a long term plan backed with a lot of strategic planning. A great way to do that is by signing your best players to long term cost certain contracts. Sure it would be nice to have Matthews signed long but 5 years is fine. The likelihood that he is going to walk in 5 years is very slim I'd say. The whole "He just wanted to get to UFA so he can go to Arizona" is as ridiculous as any Toronto Born player doing the same for the sole purpose of coming to TO. Sure if could happen but that really is a narrow way of looking at things.

Matthews understands the cap is going up and his agent wants to maximize his client's earnings. So signing for less years but still getting top dollar is smart. Now on his next contract, he will likely be able to command bigger dollars than what he would have got on a long term deal now. And don't for a second think, he wouldn't have gotten this same contract with a different GM. Young guys get paid now, its just the world we live in. What Dubas will have to do at that time is convince Matthews to take either less money long term (since that contract will run into his 30's) or he'll get big money on a 4 year deal tops. Why? Because when you are 28, you are just starting to exit your prime and sure you'll be great through your early 30's but after 32 its anyones guess so either take big money from 28-32 or get way less but take the certainty of a long term deal. Either way its a fine way of doing business. You are effectively paying guys for what they are going to do in their most productive seasons rather than paying for what they did in their prime. Watch Doughty and Karlsson become horrible contracts by the time they are 34 years old.
