Yeah I had a feeling he would eventually be brought up. Panarin is a scorer himself, and the Rangers have no forward star as of right now. They had money to blow and the numbers are hyperinflated due to free agency. Typically, players also get paid more on their second contracts at 27.

If I'm being honest I do believe Marner is probably worth 10+, but that just won't work man. If the leafs give him that then they reaaaallyy mess up. I still believe not even Matthews should have been given that much on his first contract. Why not give him Eichel money and give Marner the same thing? I don't really get it.

Marner is the only winger out of those 4. Centers get paid more, for the longest time it has been that way. Marner is playing with a much better finisher in Tavares than Aho who played with Justin Williams and Nino. Marner's highest goal total is 26, so you know a lot of points are from Tavares finishing. Matthews has been plagued with injury in the last 2 seasons, his goal total was always on pace to surpass his 40-goal rookie season (and he just had 73 points, 37 goals in 68 GAME, you need to think about what he was on pace for). He is a pure sniper that will hit 50 in multiple seasons. Also just announced that Canes will match and Aho will get $8.4M over 5.

YOU 100% have to take injuries into account. you cant use projections to say what this guy is going to do in the rest of the games. If matthews plays those 14 games cant you argue marner could have gotten over 100 points than? Leafs probably get home ice and win the cup too right? just projections of course. Cmon man, nothing comps better than players on your own team in your own market. if pasta left bruins dont you think he gets more than 6.67? marchand got a high contract for what his production was but he just hit 100, so obviously thats a good comp for marner right? in kucherovs age 21 season he put up 65 points. Marner just put up 96. Kucherov was 3 years older before he hits 100 points. and he was playing with stamkos who is also an elite goal scorer.

Not anymore Matthews 11.5 Mcdavid 12 Leo 8 kucherov 9.5 aho 8.5 to be point Nylander all got paid a lot young. Marner is next and no way he takes less than Matthews who he is BETTER than. Wasn’t it reported that he turned down 11.5

I dont think a single person on this Earth believed that the Canes wouldn't match that offer. Also, if you're going to adjust for income tax you need to adjust for the hockey market. Hockey is probably the fourth or fifth most popular professional sport in Florida, as you can tell by attendance (Panthers had an empty stadium all year, Tampa had fans out of nowhere because they were dominant last season). Marner easily makes up that same 2M difference in brand deals. He gets between 9 and 10.

A) Panthers sucked last year. Florida is being forced 2 hockey markets that it doesnt want. Thats why Aho signs the offer sheet for montreal to make up for the hockey market above and beyond what he would get in carolina. If im putting up the most points for my team, doing it all for my team and seeing 2 guys get paid more than me i want similar to them. not 2.5 less.

Leafs blew that contract offer for matthews. I have no idea why they would have offered him that deal. Makes no sense for the team.

The offersheet works for all parties involved in the aho scenario though. Montreal only gives up 1,2,3 if canes didnt match or they get a 21 year old number 1 center for a 1,2,3. Aho gets a ton of money in signing bonuses so if there is a lockout he still gets paid. He also becomes a UFA at end of deal and can leave to go to montreal for even more money at that time if he keeps up production. Canes match get a high quality up and coming player at 3m less than what matthews just signed for last year and get a 5 year window to either convince aho to stay longer term or try and win a cup around him in the next 5 years.
