I mean, outside of the signing bonuses in the first 12 months of the deal, Montreal did the Hurricanes - and the league for that matter - a monstrous favour. The comparables for most of the RFAs this year fall into the Aho and Draisaitl range, and it's going to leave franchises like Toronto and Tampa Bay in a better position.

Being reported in various places. Canes get a mixed blessing, Habs backwardly help them resolve their contract negotiations rapidly with their best player, and at a lower value than some might have pegged him at. However, they don,t get him signed quite as long as they might have liked, although a lot can happen in 5 years and it looks like their window is opening now.

“We were never going to let him go. He didn’t want to go. This is just part of the business of getting the deal done. I said the day I bought the team and nothing has changed, he’s one of if not the most important part of our future and we’re lucky to have him.”

Thats BS. If he didn't want to go he wouldn't have signed the sheet. What a moron Dundon is.

The league is better off with Toronto succeeding than not. Their developmental model needs to take root in a lot more organizations, and the ideology of purging the old boys club for a more diverse, modern approach (yes, I mean analytics, younger minds, and women) to running a hockey team is sorely needed in this league.

As an Oilers fan, I'm 1000% comfortable with the Leafs - and only the Leafs - being the team to break the Canadian Cup Curse. Really stick it to the Oilers management considering our rebuild started before Toronto's and got worse in the same time they went from basement fodder to bonafide contender.
