What to do next year

Created by: JakeD
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 4, 2019
Published: Jul. 4, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Assuming Marner gets signed, the forward core is locked up through the 2021-22 season (I don't consider Hyman "core" and I'm assuming Mitch gets ~9.5x6). The D becomes an issue with currently only Rielly signed to start 2020-21 (kinda scary to open up and see).

Any of the forwards making less than $1M are replaceable so don't come at me for that.

Dermott gets something close to: 2019 Dermott + 2019 Barrie cap hit
Barrie resigns for: 2019 Ceci cap hit + some of the increased cap space
Muzzin resigns for: 2019 Muzzin + increased cap space
Sandin and Liljegren should be ready at least for sheltered bottom pair minutes.

The Leafs plus probably not resign Barrie if they think they can get a chance to sign Pietrangelo.

If they have a chance maybe. Depends on how well Barrie fits with the team IMO. He's 2 years younger so if you can keep him longer and he fits well with that top four I think the Leafs keep him.

Dreger already said if Barrie puts up another year offensively like last year he is looking for an 8 year deal at $8m plus. Muzzin might take that small raise to stay but Barrie would want way more

If I had to choose between Barrie and Pietrangelo at 8 million for 8 years, I’d still take Pietrangelo. Better all round game.

If Gardiner can fetch $7-8m this year and Myers got $6m, Barrie can easily get $8m on the open market. He averaged 58 points the past two years and you have to believe he gets at least 50 this year on the Leafs. He is from Vancouver, they would gladly give him $8m per season

I agree, but who knows if Pietrangelo goes UFA. He would be perfect to play with Reilly. He plays a tougher game as well.

Reilly - Pietrangelo
Muzzin - Dermott

Good balance of size and skill

Who do you think is the better defenseman, Letang (peak) or Barrie?

What about Chris Tanev? Do you think the Leafs can land him with the cap going up?

I've never watched a lot of Barrie, but I would probably take Letang at his peak, But Barrie is just peaking now the past couple seasons and is only 27

With all the injuries, I think they stay clear. If they can sign Barrie next year and Muzzin, you have Reilly, Dermott, Muzzin, Barrie as your top 4. Then the kids Sandin and Lily might be ready for the bottom pair or one of them with a low cost vet.

That’s a really skilled defensive core with all puck movers. They will make mistakes but with all the offensive talent, they will cause trouble to opponents. The 2020-21 Leafs should be it’s best chance to win a cup.
