Marner OS Rumor

Created by: Hockeygoalie53
Team: 2019-20 New York Islanders

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Pagnotta is saying chatter is picking up that one team is seriously considering submitting an OS to Marner. Gotta think that team is the Isles after missing out on Panarin, Lou’s connection to Toronto and Marners friendship with Martin.

Gotta also think the OS hasn’t happened yet because Lou is lining up trades to move out some CAP and recoup some picks to off-set the loss of 4 1st rounders.

My guess is Lou offers a Panarin size offer to Marner. He and Panarin have has very similar numbers over the last 2 seasons and you gotta imagine the offer is great enough for TOR to not match due to their own CAP situation... I’m guessing something like 5yrs 12m per.

Yes, the CAP and 4 1sts is a steep price to pay, but you gotta think adding Marner to the same team that made the 2nd round and finished 2nd in the Metro makes them a legitimate cup contender for the next 5 years. Meaning those 1sts are likely to fall in the 23/24 to 31/32 (with SEA) range. Based on statistical data, only about 25% percent of players picked in that range become Marner types and only roughly 50% even become regular NHLers... that’s a possibility of 1 out of those 4 picks becoming really good and 2 becoming regulars and 2 busting out... I’d say that’s a fair swap out for someone of Marners ability.

I kept Ladd and Clutter on IR since they are wildcards in this. It’s likely they both are on LTIR giving a bit more CAP flexibility, but we don’t know for sure yet. Even with the on IR the CAP works this year with approximately 14m in available CAP next year, plus a 2m (estimate) CAP rise for 16m. If both Ladd and Clutter can stay on LTIR after this year that’s plenty of CAP space to work with going forward. If one, or both, come back healthy Clutter and/or Komarov can be bought out to make additional space.

We have enough young prospects in our system on ELCs to absorb Marners CAP for the next 5 years.

Why would Boychuk waive? The isles are a contender, Oilers aren't.

Boychuk’s contract converted to a M-NTC and lost the NMC. If the Isles tell him he’s gonna be sent to the minors to make room for better, younger players or agree to an trade to EDM, where he is from, which do you think he’d choose?

Probably the trade. Fair enough, I don't know the specifics of his contract.

As a Leafs fan I say go for it, just allows us OS Kyle Conner and get the equivalent player at less cap

And even if he doesn’t and wants to stick around as the 7th D, we keep him as a veteran presence for the young guys and move Hickey instead.

Hate to break it to you guys, but WPG has the CAP space to match any OS for Connor. So unless your gonna pay Connor more than you want to pay Marner, WPG keeps him.

Doesn’t stop the fact we can still offer him and make them make a move like Montreal did

Sure. But then you lose Marner and help WPG get Connor signed... sounds like a lose/lose tor TOR there.

Then what’s the point of signing him to an OS?

Many are speculating it’s the Isles and that’s why there is no additional information coming out about the OS

One quick point. The 4 1st's don't have to be used to draft players, they can also be traded for players who can help now.

I’d drive Leddy to Montreal if they’d give up a 1st, 2nd and 3rd for him
