I think this is a good signing on a 3 year term. I assume he slots in as the 5th or 6th D man this year.

1.6 seems a little high for 3rd pair D.

Well my friend; may I introduce you to Jack Johnson and Eric Gudbranson.

But in all seriousness it seems like all 3 pair D-man are getting at least $1- $1.25 millions now, outside of rookie contracts.

I think it's unfair to expect so much from your 3rd pairing D without adequate compensation. So the money is alright with me.

There's actually a ton of 3rd pairing D making well in excess of $3M AAV at this point. All depends on the team and their salary structure, but I'm not even talking about 3rd pair guys who are offensive/PP specialists. Obviously a team like SJS is loaded up on their top 3 D. But, look at CGY: 5 D's at $3.5M+. PIT has 5 at $3.25M+, and they just traded Matta a couple weeks ago.

BUF's 6th highest paid D brings in $2.25M (Matt Hunwick). NYR will have 5 D's at $4.35M+ once Trouba is under contract, even though they'll most likely trade or buyout Shattenkirk or Smith. Basically, if you're a solid everyday 3rd pair D and you're no longer on an ELC you're getting paid well.
