Why not offersheet Point instead? He's much better and Tampa will have a hard time matching. You can always shift one of Point, Matthews or Tavares to the wing.

Matthews and Tavares will probably never play wing. Point may, but why not get a natural winger. I like Tkachuk due to his grit (replace kadri) but if u want pure skill (not that Tkachuk doesnt have any) you can try Laine or Connor since WPG will have trouble matching too.

Point told his agent that he won’t be signing any offer sheet

This would never happen but god I would love it if it did. (the whole situation.. good bye Mitch, hello Matthew!).. and if not Thachuk, I'd say Connor would be a close second

can't offersheet McAvoy and I'd stay away from DeAneglo. He's Dan Boyle 2.0.. incredible offensively, but a liability defensively

That's right -- I forgot the wrinkle that bars the McAvoy O.S.

Makar will be in the same place in 2 years and tons of people will try to say that he'll get an offersheet

Instead of overpaying for a RFA and lose those picks., save that 9m for next year and sign a UFA and keep the picks. This year probably couldn't spend that 9m wisely on on UFA but next year certainly could and then you still have the picks.

That's IF we even got him as I'm sure Calgary would match

Has anybody else noticed that according to the CapFriendly offer-sheet calculator, we can't offer sheet anybody for more than $4.2M unless it's for the max?

Yea gotta figure Flames would match. It might "just 1m a year they want to spend. These offer sheets are really a chance by the signing team. First you overpay and you lose those picks. Still think it almost always wiser to overpay for a UFA and keep your picks.

McAvoy is a group 1 RFA so not eligible for signing an offersheet.

Agree, I wouldn't offer sheet anyone. I would look to use the picks we receive to make trades instead.

My earlier post was incorrect -- I've changed it to be accurate. But I agree with your sentiments!

Yeah, I've noticed. Like Gusev and Schuldt this year, and Makar down the road.

Even if we could offer sheet someone, what's the point? The other team will match(most likely) anyways. Just use the pics and cap space saved to make our team a much more well balanced team.

Cap Friendly is wrong on this one. We can do the 2nd highest tier. The language in the CBA is in section 10.4 which states

"Clubs owing two (s) draft selections in the same round must have them available in the next three (3) drafts"

Therefore we can use our 2021 and 2022 firsts with our 2020 2nd and 3rd for the 8.5-10.5 range offersheets.

The only tiers we cant do are the ones where we would lose 1 first round pick

EDIT: NVM its not because of the 1st. Its the 3rd.

Is it because the Leafs have trade their first rounder in the Marleau deal?. Though that may not exactly correct, you can delay a pick a year.
If it's the Isles that are offer sheet Marner.....I would looking to offer sheet Polack. Up to about 8.5m cost 1/2/3. next summer. Isles might have an expensive Barzel to sign also.

Its not because of the traded 2020 1st. Its actually because we traded our 2020 3rd. You can only delay the pick a year if the compensation requires multiple picks from the same round.
