Up till this moment BUF is winning the Off-season from my point of view, with Montour at TDL....ofc if we neglect the nasty overpayment on Skinner.....

This is the signing we were all hoping/waiting for. Great job by Botterill to get a 2C/3C for short term at a good cap hit. Johansson is such a versatile player. No doubt all the fellow Swedes helped him sign in Buffalo.

I'd hesitate saying that but we have made many good moves. Montour, Miller, Vesey, now Johansson. Skinner was an overpay but it was necessary

Let's not get carried away. They're much improved up front on paper, but they're still terrible defensively at forward and defense. They'd need to beat out FLA, BOS, TBL, or TOR to make the playoffs.

Good signing for a versatile player who can play top 6 or 9. I like both salary and term. He was good for Boston. BUF lineup shaping up well.

Unless they're a 2WC and we only see 3 teams from the Metropolitan make it, which is unlikely IMO.

What did Buffalo do that makes you feel like they're "winning the off-season?"

I think the Skinner contract will end up being the worst of the summer (especially in a few years).

I don't see how Buffalo's off-season could even be compared to the Rangers or Leafs ... for example:

THE RANGERS GOT THIS:

Artemi Panarin
Jacob Trouba
Adam Fox
Kaapo Kakko
Brandon Lemieux
Darren Raddysh
Gregg McKegg
2ND - 2019
3RD - 2020
3RD - 2021
4TH - 2019
7TH - 2019
7TH - 2020

FOR THIS:

Mats Zuccarello
Adam McQuaid
Jimmy Vesey
Neal Pionk
Ville Heinola
2ND - 2019
3RD - 2020

How would you compare that to Buffalo's off season?

You do realize the Rangers only have $8 million in cap space now? Trouba wants $7.5+ million and they still need to resign Buchnevich, Lemieux, and Deangelo. So NYR has improved the most as of now, but they might have to trade assets to get somebody to take on a bad contract like Smith or lose Kreider/Strome for cap room.

The best UFA signing this year, to date. MoJo loses big in free agency after falling through the cracks on July 1st.

Also I’m just done with how good the east is. Honestly everyone but Ottawa & Detroit (and maybe Columbus) could realistically make the playoffs.

So ... ?

Do you think they're gonna give a guy like Krieder away for free?

If they're forced to make a trade ... they'll get a fair amount of young / cheap assets back.

Just like any other team that makes trades.

No they're not lol. They have the D core now. But they're top 6 still has holes. I'll give them 2-3 years before they're a real contender.

I said PLAYOFF contender. I'd be surprised to see them win the cup. I don't think they'll make the playoffs, but they might come close.

BOTs has done very well this summer. Skinner was an overpay but absolutely required. We desperately need depth scoring and run 4 lines hard in waves. This signing helps. Our D is better now too. Goaltending is average at best. I miss the Hasek days. Hasek-like goaltending plus the current team would equal at least a playoff spot........what ifs eh?

D good, one more forward, better Goaltending is what puts this team on par with the big teams in our conf.

Are they good players though?

Would New York trade Panarin for all 4 of them combined? (Johanasson, Dea, Lazar and Gilmour). Would they trade Trouba, Kakko or Fox for them?

The answer is a hard no in all situations IMO.

Would you agree?

Never know, but the Metro is shaping up to be highly competitive next season. In fact, you can make an argument for 6 outta 8 teams to win the division given the major roster shakeups this summer. I doubt CBJ will make it, but ever other team is capable. CAR will probably regress too but PHI, NYR, and NJD are all substantially improved on paper. I can make the case for all of them, plus WASH, PIT, and NYI. I'm gonna pick at least 2 of the 3 NYC area teams to make the playoffs.

They'll dump either Shattenkirk or Smith before the season starts.
