I think Edmonton's only way out of this very bad situation they're in is to leverage Draisaitl's value. Maybe you're right that this doesn't get it done so I'll rework it and show it from Edmonton's side.

This is not the perfect deal but it deserves more consideration than it's getting. I realized long ago that there's no point in trying to make a deal with Edmonton fans. They fall in love with their players (especially prospects) until they suddenly turn and hate their guts. Habs fans have this unfortunate trait too.

Look, Draisaitl is an excellent player with a first-line cap hit. With Lucic killing them on the cap and Puljujarvi looking like a bust, without making a move LIKE THIS (Draisaitl for a top-level player on his entry-level contract), they're going to be stuck with an imbalanced roster for a very long time. Freeing up $7M for signings and then buying out Lucic in two years would allow Holland a lot more freedom to do some magic.

The oilers have a projected 25 million dollars in cap space for the 2020-2021 season. Trading a 50 goal scorer and a 100 point player to create an additional 7 million isn’t going to help them. As for overvaluing players, sure you could make that argument, but I don’t see how it applies in this situation.

Very bad? They have 25 million in cap space next offseason and then around 40 million the year after. I’m sure they’ll be better off not trading a 50 goal scorer to create additional cap space.

That $25M doesn't look so good when you look closely and realize you have very few players under contract.

They have their entire core except for nurse under contract. They’ll be fine.

They would also only have 10 players under contract, so it's a bit of a ridiculous argument. They need to sign 13 players, including Nurse, so that $25M will shrink pretty quickly. Anyway, why do I care? Keep doing what you're doing, Edmonton. Rock on!! It has been an amazing, fun decade, hasn't it?

Yeah and I’m sure and it’ll be even more fun if they end up trading a 50 goal scorer to create cap space. ?????
