Puck Possession Improved

Created by: MattyMadden28
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 10, 2019
Published: Jul. 10, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
move Muzzin for a steady cheap mid 20s D. Not sure is kulak is good enough or if Montreal would trade a couple 2nds with him for Muzzin.

Two forwards id target are Jankowski and Kase. Both are elite puck movers with supressed counting stats that will likely re-up for under 4 mil like kappy Johnsson kerfoot. Jankowski will likely be a better fit for the 3C over kerfoot and will allow kerfoot to play with matthews or Jt.

You are trying to reinvent the wheel. None of this is good. Muzzin is a top pair defenceman, Hyman is a very good player, and Johnsson is fine. This is all needless.

Bennett isn't a center and neither of the other players have any actual spot in Calgary's line up (we have ridicules LW depth as is) only players of actual interest to the Flames still on Toronto are Bracco and Kapanen due to their middle 9 potential and Toronto's RW log jam

Muzzin has one year left. Lean on Rielly and Barrie. Kulak is a steady cheap mid 20s D. But sure we can keep Muzzin and let him walk. We just have to fill that spot.

Let Barrie walk, he's going to ask for WAY more and isn't worth it. Muzzin is better and will cost less.

1) Muzzin is the only D that TML curentlly have, Ceci sucks and Rielly & Barrie can play wingers in any of 31 Teams. Muzzin needs to be re-signed next year at 4 x 5M ( hopefully )

2) Jankowski was my wish for long till i thought Kadri will go for Hamonic, now you got Kerfoot, or Spezza filling for 3#C
....the Team actually doesnt need one Hyman less but three more......

3) wheres Kase's upside against Johnsson ?

Ya I’m not sure the LWs make sense. Nor do I think Calgary would trade jankowski but I’d move /korskov plus a 2nd/3rd for jankowski

I agree. But Muzzin will be too slow in my opinion. He won’t age well. Barrie will at least produce and skate for another 5yrs.

Barrie is going to want close to 8 million, he isn't worth more than 5.5. He's not an elite #1 defenceman, he's an elite puckmover who isn't the best in his own zone. In the cap world we live in, I'll happily watch someone else massively overpay Barrie and watch that team be disappointed. Muzzin on a 2-3 year deal would be fantastic. He's not that fast, but he's so good positionally that he doesn't hurt you. He won't be too slow for a few years yet. He is after all only slightly older than Barrie.

Sure if Muzzin extends for 3years at 5 mil sure. Likely gets 7x7. Id rather Barrie at 8. Or neither. And in that case use one of them to trade for a D that’s affordable/mid 20s and cost controlled

If either asks for more than 3 year term and more than 5 million, I am telling them to walk. The Leafs have an awesome core and need to find cost effective depth. Neither of these guys are top tier players or will be for their next contracts. So let em walk if they want huge bucks.

The issue I find with Armchair GM is most people don't know how negotiating works. They just say "I want this, this, and that." Then offer what seems like "fair value" in return. The flaw in that is fair value doesn't make a trade happen. To win in an exchange you have to know what the other negotiating party wants. Flames have made it quite clear that we are only looking for a 2C upgrade or a top 6 RW (or both). Our team has incredibly good depth. Only reason we would move Jankowski/Ryan is if we find a 2C and can move backlund down to 3C

This is why I’d consider moving one. If the leafs traded Gards last summer and jvr at the deadline before they’d have plenty of assets to continue this window open.

They have plenty of assets now. The Leafs are in a fantastic position! They have Sandin and Liljegren coming up and who knows what happens with other draftees, they have a development system that is only rivaled by Tampa and a scouting department that understands skill is the hardest thing to teach, so you just draft it and develop the rest of the game.

The window is going to be open for a decade.

No doubt. But I’d be nice to have a few high end assets that could be used to get a Pesce or something.

Pesce is the most overrated player in hockey according to fans on this site. He's #3 at best on his own team and people think he's some sort of young Doughty which he isn't even close to being. He's a good player but he's a 2nd pair defenceman who isn't out of place playing on the top pair, if there is a star player to take the puck up the ice. Slavin and Hamilton are both more valuable than Pesce. Pesce in TO would be a huge improvement over Ceci, but beyond that, he's not as good as Muzzin, Barrie or Rielly. I doubt it'll make a huge difference but if the change of scenery helps Ceci, the Leafs could have one of the best top 4's in the league. Muzzin is so underrated and we all know how good Rielly is. Barrie is an upgrade over Gardiner as well. Once Dermott is healthy the Leafs have a great blueline.
