Neal back to Vegas

Created by: PhillDaThrill

Initial Creation Date: Jul. 10, 2019

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Neal did not fit in Calgary and they desperately need to move on from him. So they retain half his salary and send him to Vegas where he last saw success.

Neal would be welcomed back with open arms and not asked to do to much. This could lead to a bit of a bounce back year. Nobody expects Nashville Neal, but if he can be close to 2017-2018 Neal at less than 3 mil in cap hit, nobody will complain.

Calgary gets the best player in the deal (Gusev), so they gladly take on one year of Holden and give up a 2nd.

Financially for Calgary, the retainment of Neal added with Holden is slightly less than the cost of retaining Neal. After one year Holden is gone and they just have half of Neal's cap hit for the next 3 years. That gives them more flexibility to keep their young core together.

Financially for Vegas, it allows them to keep Eakin and give Glass one more year of seasoning in the minors. The only sacrifice left is Reaves. Or you move Eakin, play Glass with Neal and Tuch, and get to keep Reaves and have an extra million to work with at the deadline (perhaps add a veteran defenseman on an expiring deal).

The "financially for Calgary" section doesn't account for Gusev's new contract

You can’t sign an ELC after you’ve finished your ELC.

Calgary has the cap room to sign Gusev to the 2 year 4 million AAV deal he is asking for. So, I don't see an issue there, especially since he is projected to be a stud.

They also have David Rittich & Matthew Tkachuk to sign. So they don’t have room for all of them. And while this would be a good value deal for the flames, taking on an extra $3 million wouldn’t help their cap crunch at all.

Why does Calgary retain almost 3m on Neal? Why does Vegas move Gusev for 4 years of Neal when he's practically done?

Calgary can't move Neal without retaining a significant amount of his salary.

Also Vegas gets a 2nd round pick. Would you rather have the rumored 2nd and a B prospect? Also Vegas unloads Holden and doesn't have to trade Eakin.
