Buffalo has had a great offseason. If they can move risto and get a decent player in return I could see them maybe making the playoffs

The atlantic is very deep right now. Boston, Tampa and Toronto are still great, Florida, Montreal, Detroit and Buffalo took steps forward. The only team that's out is Ottawa. Its hard to rank the atlantic but if I had to bet:
1) Tampa
2)Boston
3) Florida
4) Toronto (Wildcard)
5) Buffalo
6) Montreal
7) Detroit
8) Ottawa

But I can definitely see Buffalo or Montreal taking spots from Florida or Toronto

As a leafs fan I wish the league had a 1-16 playoff format but it probably wont happen. There are almost always a few teams like LA a few seasons ago who arent good but make it because they pretty much have to who get in when there are so many more exciting teams who deserve to be there. As a fan of hockey in general though it's like the hard cap, it isnt good for growing the game

Plus there’s also the Metro, which doesn’t really have any top teams, but has a lot of teams that could make the playoffs. They have a less clear-cut order though.

Depending on how this season goes, specifically in the Atlantic, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a big talking point in CBA negotiations.

I think every team can make it in the Atlantic. But if I were to put money, id say Isles, Columbus, Pittsburgh drop out. Rangers, Carolina and Philly take the top 3 spots with New Jersey and Washington fighting for wildcard spots.

you want Risto on another team (because you know he is a below average player) but you want another team to give up something significant for him.
buffalo fans talking out both sides of their mouth.
figure it out...

I could definitely be wrong, but I don't think Philly improved enough to be a top 3 finisher in the Metro. They only really added Niskanen and Hayes. I think the Rangers are still a fringe playoff team. Panarin and Trouba were good adds, but you'd still be relying on a 37 year old Lundqvist and a relatively unproven Georgiev to backstop them. IMO, the top 3 in the Metro will be some order of Carolina, Washington, and Pittsburgh. I won't count out the Pens with Crosby and Malkin on their roster until I'm proven otherwise.

Similar to what I’ve been thinking, but I just don’t want to count out Trotz or Crosby. Either way it will be a very tight race in the east.

Yeah I originally had New Jersey and Philly fighting for WC and Washington as top 3. But yeah Pitt would be next in line fighting for a WC berth.

Yeah, on top of that, the Caps also addressed their biggest weaknesses in penalty killing, shot suppression, and high-danger chances. The bottom six got considerably better defensively, and the d-core is younger and better at moving the puck. I think you'll probably see Holtby's SV% raise too, so I'd be really surprised if WSH wasn't top 3 in their division. I could definitely see the case of trading out depth scoring for defensive responsibility, but I don't think Washington regressed enough and other teams in the Metro improved enough for them to fall out of the top 3.

Honestly I don't care what we get for him anymore. He is no longer a top 6 D for me, so get what you can, Idc

I've joked in the past at Risto at RW, but it's not happening on any team.
