In your opinion, who is the better player at their best, Mario Lemieux or Auston Matthews?

Thats a very flawed question, compared to their competition at the time of their peak? Or if they both played now at their peak?

If the 1st Lemieux by a landslide, if the 2nd Matthews for sure.

Mario is debatably a top 3 player of all time.. Matthews is great, but Mario was generational

For me the top 5 players of all time are:

1. Howe
2. Gretzky
3. Orr
4. Lemieux
5. Crosby

Thoughts?

Gaudreau played for Boston College in Hockey East. Not Big Ten.

Who do you guys think was the better defenseman in their prime, Letang or Byfuglien?

Gretzky
Orr
Lemieux

Then I'm not really sure to be honest.

I put Howe at number one because Gretzky, Lemieux and Orr all admitted he was the greatest most iconic figure in the sport. He’s like the Pele of ice hockey.

Letang. No question. He's a complete defenseman. Byfuglien is good, but he can't carry an entire defensive unit while Letang could.

Again that is a matter of perspective. During Lemieux's time he was well ahead of the average skill of other players but since that average has drastically increased. The game has become more textbook and streamlined.

It's important to remember that the League tripled in size during Orr's era, If tomorrow the league became 90 teams instead of 30 Crosby and McDavid would look like gods as well

Yeah but I don’t think that’s the reason why Orr was so highly regarded. He was really just an exceptional defenseman that completely set the standards for a puck mover going forward.

Absolutely. Most Americans believe Byfuglien is better because of his heaviness and physical play but Letang is much more skilled. Better skating, agility, puck skills and defensive awareness.

I suggest you read his book, it's one of the main things he brings up about his success

I think I read it before and I do recall him talking about the impact of the expansion. However, we can’t deny his skill and skating. Absolutely in a class of his own.

Kane, his puck control skills are the best in the world

I agree, Hull couldn’t carry Kane’s jock strap. As an individual player, Kane’s skillset devastates Hull.

I always have Gretz #1, Howe is 2 or 3 in my opinion. Tough to say when you're talking legends though, it varies based off of preference

Understandable. I still say Gretzky is the greatest just because no one could read a play better than him.

Not just that, but Letang can actually hit too. Unfortunately he was very limited because of injuries but he was always my favorite Penguins player (post 2005 lockout).

Two completely different players. Kane is the total package where Hull was a pure sniper. If you're going all around than probably Kane. It's tough to take a guy nowadays and (or in the past) and put them up against guys of different eras.

Not just his offensive ability, the guy was a very good defender. Completely underrated in his defensive abilities
