Perfect example of how a playoff performance can make or break your next contract.

I wonder how he'll succeed without Stone or Duchene

He will probably play with Staal and Svechnikov so I think he will be alright. Good contract ! I honestly thought a team was going to give him 4,5.

Looks like he picked Carolina because of the team’s potential for success and not the money. This is a great signing! Expected at least $4.5M AAV

I think he bombed once he left ottawa and once that happened his market dropped out from under him. He never really fit into columbus system.

Hurricanes are looking pretty solid, and this is a really nice contract. If the goaltending can be reliable I think Carolina would make a push for another wild-card appearance, or maybe finish 3rd in the Metro.

Carolina look like a solidified team

Williams has said he's either gonna come back to the team or retire, if he comes back this is one of the better league wide forward cores
Defensively, Carolina's is a top 5 unit, has been for a while
IF the goaltending is reliable, Carolina look good. I'm impressed with what Waddell and Dundon turned this team into. Full props, and we may end up being a SERIOUS contender next year. We didn't lose anyone of value outside Ferland, and we replaced him with Haula and Dzingel (I think I'll live with that) Carolina, should the goaltending hold, look like a contender. This may be in the prisioner if the moment, but they should have a full 4 RW who scored more than 15 goals next year (Svech 20, Dzingel 26, Williams 23, Martinook 15) and 3 potential 20 goal Centres with Staal, Aho and Haula. Throw in Teravainen and Nino Niederriter who had around the 25 goal mark each, Martin Necas and the progression of Warren Foegele, this is a scary team.

I wonder if we're gonna finally start to see a trend of mid-tier UFA's (rightfully) getting shorter deals due to their age. First Johansson and now Dzingel. Just a year or two ago we likely would've seen these guys get 4+ year contracts.

right now nobody wants to go to Edmonton smile
I think this is a good deal for both sides and I am actually happy that he signed with the Hurricanes now that Ferland went to the Canucks.

This also wraps up the last of the key UFAs at forward more or less - just spare part players and a few vets like Williams and Thornton who are more playing for pride now than for money

You are assuming that Rutherford did not offer anything to Dzingel, possibly even more $. Maybe Dzingel just said no.

Kessel to Dzingel: "Let me tell you about Sullivan..."
Dzingel to Rutherford: "4 year extension to Sullivan huh? Pass."
