More to the Jokiharju trade than meets the eye

Created by: DrumMan44
Team: 2019-20 Chicago Blackhawks
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 12, 2019
Published: Jul. 12, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Allegedly, Ian Mitchell's camp knew that the Jokiharju trade was coming prior to it becoming official. Taking that in account with reports that the Chicago front office is meeting with Mitchell next week makes it seem like the following:

1) The FO views Mitchell as a superior RHD Prospect
2) Since he is still not signed, Stan alleviated some of the logjam on the right side to promise him more playing time, either in Rockford or the big club.
3) They are going to try to convince him to sign next week and turn pro, as opposed to returning to school.

Also, for third line Right Wing, In my mind, Nylander, Saarela, Sikura, and Kurashev are all vying for this roster spot. Whoever performs best will get it.

Nylander at BEST is a 4th liner..maybe he'll improve, but he has no defense and is slow without the puck, no anticipation. But thanks for Joki.

It’ll take a pick or prospect to get rid of that Anisimov contract.

In Colliton's system a 4th liner without defense isn't a fourth liner, sadly.

Like I said, it's going to be a bit of a competition for that spot.

Look what Chicago did for Strome. Got him outta ARI and made his a 2nd line C, not too hard to imagine them doing something similar with Nylander. Not too long ago this kid was a 1st rounder

Because Murphy is a shut down defenseman that needs a shut down partner (De Haan) to create a good shut down pairing. Jokiharju is really good on both ends, but he doesn't have a roster spot. I would have rather seen them trade Joker in a package to get rid of Keith or Seabrook but that must have been viewed as too pricey of a move to make.

If he has no defense he's not going to play on the 4th line. Hawks are getting as many young forwards that need a scenery change as they can to rotate as 1LW. Kubalik, Quenneville, Saarela, Nylander, and Sikura will all get a chance to play on the top line at some point.

Due respect, but so was perlini and Koekkoek, not everyone is able to be saved. I’m pretty sure nylander fits in that category.

Oh jeez, Nylander had the most talent in his draft......if he's a 4th liner he's not an NHL'er.....It's top 6 or bust for him.....and frankly I think he excels on either top 2 lines..Jokiharju isn't better than Murphy....Murphy's advanced stats are really good. Thats not to say at some point Joki couldn't be better, but I have yet to see it.
I think the real reason the Hawks made this trade is because of the expansion draft. Joki had to be protected because he played last year....meaning they couldn't protect any other D-men (seabrook and keith have NMC's and have to be protected), so Gustaffson was gone. This means the Hawks can protect him, if they dont trade him at the deadline (and if they do it means they can protect one of the new guys).
The Ian Mitchell thing is really interesting though, and potentially is another benefit of the trade...

That's not what I think, but the return for Jokiharju is better than the return for Murphy would have been. Nylander is only 21, he has loads of talent. What were a lot of Murphy trades on here? Murphy for Connor Brown from TOR. Which return sounds better?

If Kurashev starts the season, that either means is he better than expected, or we everyone else sucks.

Ottawa gives at best a 4th rounder for Anisimov and Slater
