Cap space to sign Marner.. Retention on Vats Salary as they wont resign Gardiner and Mcleod as they now have lost Kadri, need Centre depth

Exactly, the Leafs don't want another LD and an offensive one at that

Id rather trade Marner than trade Nylander to be able to overpay Marner.

The Leafs are really cap compliant with the expected Marner contract, so "helping" the Leafs isn't that needed. The value of the trade. Leafs would really have to think McLeod is gonna to be a good NHLer to make that deal, other wise it's one year of Vatanen and the pick, might 10, maybe lottery lucky 3, or 20.
You mentioned centre depth. They did get Kerfoot in the trade and have Spezza. When Is McLeod NHL competent is the question in the trade.

Replace Vatanen with Severson, remove the salary retention and you got yourself a deal.

Vatanen is right-handed but can play both sides, however after the Leafs acquired Barrie it doesn't make a lot of sense to also go after Vatanen.

It is also weird how similar Barrie and Vatanen are: both right handed, both drafted in the mid rounds of 2009, both 5'10", both around 190lbs, both offensively minded d-man. Vatanen is like the Finnish generic brand of Barrie.

Long story short: I had a garbage day, I hated the trade when I heard it on the radio, went over the top (once I reached my computer after complaining about it all day), and lost it and changed my name to "FireShero."

Also I think a lot of the anger came from the Rangers getting Trouba, losing Santini (liked him since he was a psychical defender), not taking on Marleau's contract for picks, and trading away the 2020 2nd which limited the options for offer-sheets this year. In retrospect the trade makes a lot of sense: NJ needed another RH D-man who could play 20-24 mins a nigh, it lessened the load on Severson, NJ needed defensive help, and it was a good deal for NJ to get a top-2 defense-man.

Basically Shero made the team better, but not exactly how I wanted; So I want on a rant backed almost entirely by hot air.
