Want to become UFA as soon as possible I think.

Aho did take a discount in order to do that as well.

I totally understand that angle, but if the Isles really approached with 7 years and 12.5, i don't understand him saying no to that term. He becomes tied for the highest cap hit

Indeed.

Guess there's no telling why he's being such a f*cktard regarding that contract.

It's getting really screwy. And it's starting to come off as being all about ego.

My take at this point is he want's AM money in Toronto, or nothing. And somehow his camp thinks he'll get it. My guess is he'll sit for a year or be traded if he thinks that's how the world turns

That's gonna hurt Toronto as well. I don't see them being in a position where they can let their best winger sit out the whole season. Especially when Dubas has finally acquired some key assets (1RHD in Barrie).

Basically the gist of what I read says that Toronto doesn't want four or five years. They've discussed 2, 3, and 6 year deals. Additionally, Marner won't take seven years from any team, but if he comes around on that, the Isles are a potential destination. I do not understand his thought process at all, and yeah, sorta seems like ego at this point.

Yeah, it would hurt to lose him for the season, but not as much as caving to some of these reported demands. If the leafs did that it could hurt for alot more than one season.

It was reported awhile ago that the Leafs tabled a 10M * 8yr year deal and that was nixed (reported is the key word here, so who knows?).

I don't get the thought process either. If there is a a 12.5M/7yr OS out there and it's about the money for Marner, then he should take it and run (that's McJesus money..). And 80M to be a leaf, like he says he wants to, isn't bad either. It really does seem to me like he needs to be the highest paid leaf. That seems a little toxic if true.

it's simple: if marner takes say 11 now for 5 years thats 55 million dollars. his next contract will be at 26-27 years old, with 3-4 prime years left in him, he could get a contract on the open market that is ~16 % of the cap (at signing) for 7 yrs. lets say the cap increases at a steady rate of 3 %. the season following the expiration of that 5 year deal the cap will be ~ 94.5 million. so his contract could be ~15.25 for 7 years.

in that scenario the career earnings would be 161.75 million gross.

conversely if he signs a 7 year deal now at 12.5 (87.5 total), and he goes on the market with only 1-2 yrs of prime years left at 29, he's more likely to get a deal worth closer to 9% of the cap and only for 4 years, maybe 5. assuming the same growth rate of the cap, 3%, the cap would be 100.25 and say he gets that 5th year, his second contract is worth a total of ~45 million. in this scenario his career earnings is 132.6 million gross.

That makes sense for Marner, I guess. But I think it get's much more simple than that... Aho just signed a 8.5M aav for 5 years. Who is going to give Marner 11M aav for 5 years? I'd say its simple.. no one.

So, if this is all about the money and he has a 12M/7yr OS on the table then he should take it and run. My take, though, is that this isn't as simple as it being about money. Ego is playing a big part in this..

Apparently he's scared the Leafs won't match. He clearly wants to stay in Toronto. Just odd to constantly bicker about cash and then walk away from the cash

i was simply pointing out the financial aspect of taking 11 for 5 even 10 for 5 vs taking 12.5 for 7. in the long run it means he will gross less income by taking a higher AAV longer term deal now. he's been convinced that he's worth Matthews money. I know if I think I'm worth 100,000 dollars a year, and I'm only getting offered 80,000 dollars a year, I'd start looking for other places to hire me for what I want and if my company wants to match that, then they can.

i very much doubt anyone has offered 12.5 x 5 or even for 7. I would pontificate and say the most he's gotten offered is 11. if the leafs get up to 10.5, he'll probably take it. they probably aren't offering more than 9-9.5 on a 5 yr term

Oh, I agree with what you laid out. I just don't see any team giving him the Mathews contract, or anything close, really, on a 5yr term.

And I'm starting to think that this is what's possibly going on... Marner's camp thinks he's the best player on the team and he needs to be paid like it, which means AM money/contract or bust.

They're kinda coming off as being a bit delusional.

I personally think he's the best forward on the team in totality, but a player like matthews whos scores 30-40 goals a season and is a true number 1 center is bound to get paid more. i think for the Islanders its worth giving hiim 10.5-11.5 million x 5 yrs, and trading Bailey and Leddy to recoup some of the assets lost and free up cap space for next years signings. I think anything above 9 frankly its worth it to move Marner for the leafs. the biggest mistake made by lil Dubi was not moving nylander when he had the chance. the next biggest mistake is that he's trying to build an offense only team; which will be great in the regular season, and continue to bow out early in the playoffs.

Well, if the islanders think he's worth that, then as a leaf fan I would welcome that OS and the 4 firsts once Marner signs it. It could make Barzals contract difficult next year though.

As for Dubas and his mistakes, I don't see too many mistakes given he's only been on the job for a year. He pretty much has all his work done right now with only Marner to sign and enough cap to do so. And if Mitch won't sign, he's positioned himself and the org to come out ontop of any PR fallout
