What I would like for Marner

Created by: GenXHockey
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 13, 2019
Published: Jul. 13, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I would like to see Dubas push hard for the 6 year deal. Marner can wait on Matthews to sign again. I see an incoming bridge deal but Dubas doesn’t have to rush or put any terms off the table. The longer Mitch waits the more in control Dubas is of the negotiations. 1.43m more than Aho for 1 extra year seems more than fair.

Maybe a bit less, somewhere between 9.5-9.75 (6 years is ideal), but this is tolerable.

I would say that first bluf that Ferris was trying to pull, the infamous Offer-sheet, isnt working anymore. The "magicaly loaded" Teams that should do it and have Cap space are all coming with their own "big contracts" to be signed next year and would need to dump 4 players+ to be compatible, so this trump card has gone.

Or even if its still a thing, as i said yesterday in one of the threads, While Mitch doesnt have much saying in negotiations part where Ferris and Paul are holding upper hand at it to crop their share, when it will / was come to signing an Offer-sheet theres pretty much what i was saying from the start...thats the part where he can decide how thing will play and he will not sign it, knowing hes town darling and all the money the others can offer him, he can compensate thru all the additional assets and benefits that hes cropping thru advertisments being a hometown boy etcetc

Supposedly ( by the mighty Burke ) TML offered 8 x 10M, which Ferris rejected, so Dubarelli's message with signing everyone else was, we offered our max, cause you want shorter term anything that we will talk from now on will be in money span that we left for you ( 9,7M )

Tho you neglected additional leverage that Ferris will play on, the holdout into the Season which with Cap crunch will rise the Marners impact into this years Cap and forcing Dubarelli tryin to avoid it.....

My curent guesses are :

3 x 7,7M ( after 2 x 6M and 3 x 4,67M you know who )
4 x ------- ( avoiding the term )
5 x 9,5M ( 1M above Aho, just cause Dubarelli can )

But hey, i am the guy who was giving Matthews 8 x 10,5M ( Eichel ) last summer....what do i know.....

I really do think this is what Marner will get. If you wants shorter term, it would be 3 (not 4 or 5), for less money.

Sounds too reasonable to be accepted. No reason to think Marner would get much more elsewhere. Good thought on the signing and lineup.

If I was a Leafs fan I’d be getting a bit annoyed. Buddy wants unreasonable money AND to be able to walk to FA? LMAO yea right buddy either you get 9-10 with 3-4 yrs or 10.5-11 for 6-7 years. Can’t have both

I do agree, I think on 6 years it should be 9-9.5m. Trying to be a bit more realistic. It all depends how long dubas wants to wait him out. Once other rfa’s like Rantanen, Tkachuk, Laine and point sign their deals I think the market will drive his price down slightly.

What's wrong with playing hardball with Marner?
Especially if he's not willing to sign long term?

If Dubarelli would play hardball with Matthews already, this situation wouldnt be here now.....

Well the Matthews contract is over and done with for now. Dubas can choose to play hardball now if he wants...he does have the leverage.

No if Dubas wouldn’t have gave Matthews a contract he wouldn’t have been here right now. July 1st Matthews has an offersheet for13m+.... for real, not these Ferris sheets. He’s a big goal scoring franchise centre. After watching what he did and how he did it last season I think Dubas did what he had to. I couldn’t see Matthews on anything under 12.5m on an 8 year deal. Losing him would have been a colossal mistake.

Well...two camps again, me, palhal and few others coming from the other side of the tracks...or glass half filled with water, you know. I believe we all were giving him 7-8 x 10-10,5M back last summer ( didnt went to check your old threads but im sure those were my numbers and many others too, and i even considered that an overpayment ) and i completely agree he being signed was top priority, its just either 8 x 11,6M or 5 x 9,5M in my books if we start building on numbers that Dubarelli gave us.

Bothers me now all ppl are yelling, fck you greedy Mitch and similar, tho Ferris has all the right to play "we want Matthews money" game and we are talking about the native son of Toronto, so he should be praised even more........

Last summer I would have gave him 10.5m... then he started destroying before he was injured. I think at that point he had a blank cheque.

I'm okay with Marner trying to get as much as he can but when I comment in any ACGM about him or any player for that matter, I'm viewing the situation from a GM point of view.

I hope Marner gets everything he deserves and then some, he is a fantastic young kid.
Sorry if me viewing things from a GM perspective makes me look like I'm anti Marner or have some special vendetta against him. I don't.

I feel the same way. Although I think his camp has gone about things in a very greasy way. Ferris can say whatever he wants about Mitch being respected but Ferris has only one thing in mind... Dollar signs. I really do get the feeling That Dubas has a lot more respect for marner than Ferris.

nah mate, its all fair, didnt went after you with that statement, Its just....bad parenting.

You buy your first kid a bike in January cause he ended two years with B overall but this year he started with A grades and at midterm you already reward him with anything that he wants, just so he ended the year with B+, while your other kid gets yo-yo after two years with B overall and ended the year with A grades, but its the first kid who got your looks and the second didnt ( center and winger reference ) so you like him more.....

What a poor, but interesting anology.

So how about we replace it with one kid on the honour roll with straight A’s and the other finishes with a B average. The kid on the honour role gets a new bike and the other gets a skateboard. The difference between a bike and a yo-yo seems pretty exaggerated compared to a gap in 10m and 11.5m, although hyperbole does tend to run rampant here.

Well....i tried and deliberatelly exagerated...

Bike is overpayment tho, you reward the results not the promises, they should both get skateboards...
