Description
Just with the rumors about CBJ wanting to offer sheet Marner and luring the Leafs into trading Nylander to them instead. Not really sure what would happen, but I assume it would still be a big price for CBJ to actually accomplish that.

Stop it. Either Marner is signed to reasonable deal or Marner is gone.

I have spoken to many Leaf fans and they all told me they would rather have Nylander on their team over Marner. They believe Nylander is a far better player than Marner and showed me their advanced stats. I must admit, the numbers do not lie.

Nylander’s career Corsi For is 54%, Marner’s is 40%.

For these players listed below, they all have a higher goals per 60 ratio when playing with Nylander compared to playing with Marner.

Kadri has a .86 G/60 playing with Nylander and .85 playing with Marner.

Van Riemsdyk has a 1.33 G/60 playing with Nylander and 1.18 with Marner.

Tavares has a 6.27 G/60 playing with Nylander and 1.53 with Marner.

Matthews has a 1.53 G/60 with Nylander and a 1.04 with Marner.

Leaf fans believe that these stats suggest Nylander is a far more talented and capable individual player compared to Marner, plus he has a better all round game. Therefore there is no reason for Marner to get more money than Nylander, any offer sheet above 5 million dollars the Leafs should not bother matching. Many have told me that Marner is actually nothing special, just another role player who gets carried by the likes of Tavares and Kadri making him good great. In reality, Mitch Marner’s closest comparable is Conor Sheary. What’d you think?

Marner is taking anything less than 11 million. Maybe 10.5 on a bridge but dubas set the market and now he will pay

I got a lot of flack for "overvalueing" William Nylander. thats what im talking about. Im not talking from my ass lol. Number with Tavares is ridiculously good! And.. it shows secret magic between those two. Marner is great player too but to say he is 4-5mil more valuable is ridiculous. Marner and Nylander.. Id say that they are two same players who grow up in different environments. Marner in OHL, Nylander in Sweden.. but essentially both are awesome players. Tavares enhanced his point stats insanely. He should be realistically making around 9mil tbh due to all things considered.

He is not going to get above 10. More like 9.5-9.75 on 6yrs deal and he would be crowned as hometown boy who took a discount to play in Toronto.. thats his slight overpayment like Nylander got (he shouldve gotten 6.5 and got 6.9) and Matthews got (he shouldve gotten 11 but got 11.6).. 0.5mil overpayment for mitch is 9.75 on 6yr deal. Otherwise it would be 9.2-9.3 for 6yrs.

I was listening to Rahef Issa, the girl on the Leafs radio show and she suggested that Mitch Marner should be getting paid similar numbers to Conor Sheary of the Penguins, since both of them get carried by elite centremen and are nothing without them. What’d you think?

Because of term. He would get less on shorter term. Sounds logical right?

Rahef.. oh I love her.. but he should be paid more, he is great playmaker, but a lot of his game depends on who is he playing with not like Matthews or Tavares who can play with whoever and contribute amazingly. Matthews once had Marleau and Ennis as his wingers and scored like 1.3 points per game in that stretch.. Marner is great talent but to say he is worth anything close to Matthews is ridiculous. Marner played some time on 4th line and disappeared. Nylander played on 4th line for some time and ate opposition alive.

I agree, though I don’t remember Nylander playing on the fourth line. Marner was not very consistent in 2016-17 and 2017-18. In his first year he was a healthy scratch for a good portion and he spent the first half of his second season on the fourth line. After he got out with Kadri and Marleau, he really picked it up.

Yeah.. I did some research (I have my own opinions, I make my own research and I dont live by someones opinion. That counts for everything in my life) for my blog in Slovakia for yesterdays piece on Marners contract and by all the numbers, all the essentials I got in that deal.. I ended up in low 9s on 6yr deal. I know my **** in hockey. And I got a lot of flack with my comments on Nylander but I really believe if you gave Nylander PP minutes instead of Marner, he might have higher point total easily..

Worth noting that with the exception of Matthews, all of those guys played significantly more time with Marner than with Nylander. Tavares in particular I don't think you can draw any meaningful data from their time on ice together. Way too small of a sample size.

It's a hard argument to say that Nylander is the better player, but I don't think there's any debate that Nylander at <7 is better value than Marner at 10+.

I'd rather have Nylander + the return for Mitch Marner than Marner + the return for William Nylander.

Tbh, take out the picks and then the trade might happen, Columbus can’t stand to lose the picks right now, also not sure they’d want Ceci would walks at the end of the season, though he can easily be replaced or flipped at deadline.

That is reasonable. Maybe 6yr term is more reasonable but trading Nylander is pure stupidity.

Speculation is all we have, and where there is smoke there tends to be fire.

Marner wants to stay a Leaf, period.
