Dubas Strategy

Created by: SudburyBill
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 14, 2019
Published: Jul. 14, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
All that remains is signing Marner and letting training camp decide who stays and who gets waived. Dubas has $10.4 M with a 22 player roster to pay Marner and other GMs have done the math, so no offer sheet. Marner should get $9.5 for 2 or 3 years, and $10.4 for a longer term. Shore, D’Agostino, Petan, and Marincin if lost on waivers, did not cost anything. Bracco is part of the future but needs another year with Marlies. If Marner signs the shorter term, then the Leafs can carry a 23 player roster.

Ben harpur has almost no chance of making the nhl. I also dont think spezza is good enough for 3c. I would rather have kerfoot there and move moore up

yeah, but kerfoot played a lot of wing last year. i think the bottom 6 will get fewer mins than they did last year.

Jack: Lots of possibilities with all those guys signed for $1 M or less. It might be Harper who gets waived and Marincin gets a spot. Shore or Kerfott might grab 3C and Spezza is 4C and important faceoffs. Bottom six and third pair will see lots of rotation until they find the right guys.

Speeza doesnt have the speed and awareness to play C now, he played mostly wing once the Stars put him back on the roster, he might okay to take faceoffs but that's it it.

Kerfoot should be the 3rd line C, likely paired with Kapanen and Moore/Johnsson

well im pretty sure tavares and matthews wouldn't be happy if they werent getting 20 mins a night each right? I mean, there is no excuse for them to get less, as Kadri isn't here. plus those 2 guys are gonna have to play more of a shut down role. spezza is great, buy you arent putting him up against the other teams top lines, niether are you playing kerfoot against the other teams top 6. line matches will be interesting to see this year.

Nothing wrong with the bottom 6 getting min in the regular season. Playoffs is a different story

The issue with Marner is not just amount but length. He wants to hit FA as fast as possible.
You are looking at a 4 year deal which is probably what he wants. That gives him 7 years required to be a FA.
There is no doubt length is just as much an issue as amount.
This was also the issue in a offer sheeting. Teams wanted 5 years on the offer sheet.
At some point he might compromise with 5 years. But I don't see any reason why he takes more than that.

In your narrative you mentioned player "being lost of waivers". Doubt if those players are claimed, but they might be Marlies. There isn't that much logic is saying Marner gets 9.5 on a 2 or 3 year deal, when Aho got 8.45m for five years.

Aho was a bargain at that price when you look at the corps!
