Better or Worst

Description
I know its uncertain if we would have been able to draft KK if this team was still in place, however I am curious if you guys think were better or worst like this.
I believe the team is slightly better this way, however still not serious contenders and by keeping the team this way their prospect pool wouldn't have been as deep as it is now and that's how you win in this league. So all in all good finish.

I think it's worst, but there is a lot of personal apreciation in this. Objectively this team is pretty good, I just prefer our current team.

First of all, it’s “better or WORSE”, not “worst”. Anyways, this team is better off without Radulov (mostly the salary, but we also wouldn’t have KK). The Drouin-Sergachev, Galchenyuk-Domi, Subban-Weber, and Tatar/Suzuki/2nd-Pacioretty trades were all massive wins for Montreal. So I’ll say the team is similar, just because of Radulov, but Weber > Subban, Drouin > Sergachev, Domi > Galchenyuk, Tatar = Pacioretty, and Suzuki+Norlinder+LeGuerrier > Nothing.

So all in all Bergevin has done a great job as a General Manager, and has honestly made very few moves that are definitely mistakes.

Bergevin is a genius. By not signing Radu (2017 summer), it allowed us to draft Kk (2018 summer). That was is plan from the begining ! Kk is the #1 center we missed the last 20 years. More seriously, just look at our team (player + prospect + picks) two years ago vs now. Patient is the key. I laught when I heard "we haven't won a cup the last 25 years so patient is enought" or "we missed the playoff 3 times the last 4 years, patient sucks". Patient does not mean past fails. For me (so maybe I'm wrong), patient is to accept we wont win the cup/make the playoff THIS YEAR and stop making short term moves. The only "patient" year we had was last years because our goal was not "making the playoff". I hope Geoff see the same thing because next year, we probably wont make the playoff, but that doesn't mean were aren't in the wright direction !

Agree with most of your text. The only thing I dont is saying Drouin/Sergachev is a massive win. As for now (it still can change), TB is the winner. I would rather keep Sergachev knowing that drouin as no become the player we saw in juniors. I'm not saying Sergachev is perfect (he still needs to work on his own zone) and that Drouin is terrible (he can put 50-60 pts by season). But objectivevely, Tampa has won the trade, for now

There are still people insane enough that they think the Weber Subban trade wasn't a huge loss for Montreal?

Nashville just decided to trade Subban and didn't get a kings ransom but got a fine return. That Weber contract is an albatross

Agreed I think MTL lost that trade, but more because of the age difference and extremly long contract weber has. unless Weber proves me wrong and plays really strong hockey until hes in his late 30s I dont see that trade as a win.

Shoulda, coulda, woulda.

Truth is, If Price didn't get hurt in 16-17, Habs most of these players mentioned above would still be on the team because the habs were poised to have multiple long playoff runs with a healthy Price. That year caused a lot of riffs to happen and a lot of things to be looked into that weren't previously.

I won't get into every trade because I've already been there, done that but my frustration with MB ultimately has been his terrible timing. Now in some cases he pulled a rabbit out of his hat and Im thankful but I feel at times he was more luckier than he was smart in some of those cases. If we're being honest, since the first domino fell with Subban, the Habs have made the playoffs once and they lost in the first round.

-Pacioretty - Left on bad terms.... traded after his worst season.
-Subban - Left on bad terms.... traded after his worst season.
-Galchenyuk - left on bad terms.... traded after repeatedly being played on the 4th line and was clear was a defensive liability.
-Radulov and Markov - not left on bad terms but those deals should have been done earlier (based on where the Habs were going) and shouldn't have been stretched out the way they were that it caused friction and both players to look elsewhere. Markov not resigning with the Habs is quite possibly the dumbest thing MB has ever done. That should have been done in like 5 mins.
-Sergachev - Young player you just drafted at a major position of need traded away before he got a chance to prove himself for you guessed it. A player at a position that was not needed and forced into a role of need and just so happened to be a hometown kid.

Now Im not saying some of these were bad and that the returns we got weren't good but why is it MB waits so long to move players that they end up resenting him and management? That's what annoys me about MB, not who he's trading but when he's deciding to trade them.

Oh Weber was the better dman than Subban at that point in their careers. But with age and contract there was no comparison. That contract was all about taking advantage the first 6 years or so and regretting it the rest. You basically only got the bad years

The stupid thing about the Sergachev trade at the time and still today all these years later was not the value of the two pieces.

It's that you traded your biggest trade piece, created an organizational depth problem (high end d prospects) and acquired something you didn't really need (a winger). You needed a C

I may have been over exaggerating by saying it’s a “massive win”. I think as of right now, both players are disappointments and Montreal is currently the slight winner, which could change depending on Sergachev & Drouin. Even though I think Montreal is currently the “winner”, it’s still a good trade for the bolts, because Sergachev plays D (a bigger are of need) and is cheaper than Drouin.
