no point for ARZ to do this, might as well lose 4 1st rounders and overpay Marner a bit (assuming he would sign it)

Come on LM, we know Marner wants to be a Leaf, lots of Canadian endorsements on the books, he will sign for between $9.5 and $10.4 depending on term.

Not just that...being close to family and friends is something money can't buy.
Can't buy the god-like status players get once they stay and show their loyalty to the Leafs.

These things matter once one gets passed the part where getting paid (handsomely might I add) happens.

Zona does not have the cap space and it’s an overpayment.

He’s not Gretzky. You guys need to get it out of your head that the 4 1sts that would come with an offer sheet signing is his trade value. It isn’t. Don’t get me wrong, he has very high trade value. But offer sheet compensation value and actual trade value are two different things.

Also be careful what you wish for. Most Leaf fans would take the 4 1sts and run. That Gretzky guy....the 3 1sts that were acquired when he was traded were used on Jason Miller, Martin Rucinsky, and Nick Stadjuar. That’s why OS comp is different than actual trade value. Draft picks are a crapshoot.

Very weird saying Zona does not have the cap space BTW. Lol.

I agree with almost all of this except the value of the four firsts. If it came to that, I'd imagine the leafs just use the 1st rd picks as currency in trades and don't worry at all about drafting to replace Marner. 7 first round picks in the next four years is alot of currency..

But I highly doubt any team gives that up for the privilege to pay Marner 10.5M +. I just don't see it happening. And if he's traded I don't see him getting the return that alot of AGMs suggest he will. You're right, he isn't Gretzky. He's a heck of a hockey player who seems to be on a collision course between his camp's inflated sense of his value and the reality of how the rest of the hockey universe perceives his value. It's gonna be interesting to see where this ends up.
