Pearson, Tanev, Edler won't be on the team..... Goldy is not making 3.5. Markstrom could be gone if DePietro is ready to come up with Demko.... Beagle, and rousell will be traded. Canucks are not in Cap trouble

Demko should be ready for the starter job in 2 year, and if not hes not making that much. Unless Goldobin puts up 40-50 points, he will make closer to 2 million. Edler and Tanev won't be resigned since younger players like Juolevi, and Woo will be ready for the top 6. Pearson and Leivo won't be signed to make space for players like Madden, Lockwood, Podkolzkin, Hoglander and Lind.

Wow that's a pretty solid D-Core you got there ....

Hugh - Myers
Benn - Biega
Juolevi - Woo

Demko
Mr. Siv

I can almost taste the 3rd overall pick.

But they are though ... and they'll be in performance trouble if your 2 best defensemen leave and you have to give up assets to dump Beagle and Roussell.

You can't subtract like that from a bottom 10 team and expect good results.

Julolevi and Woo have don't nothing to show their top-6 worthy yet ... aside from being high draft picks ... you can't just slot them in before they become NHL regulars.

That would be as ludicrous as slotting Liljegren + Sandin + Hollowell into the Leafs top 4 and saying Rielly + Muzzin + Dermott are expendable.

Yeah no development will happen in 2 years Juolevi and Woo will just be 3rd pair plugs for convenience of your point. Demko and DiPietro have shown nothing for the convenience of your point. Vancouver cant find cheaper substitutes for this roster or fill their holes if need be through trades or UFA over 2 years for the convenience of your point. Guess the league will also skip the expansion draft, just to help you out as well. I think a professional GM will be able to figure it out over 2 years, so the Canucks are fine

It only makes sense to assume they would progress as most prospects would. Even if Juolevi and Woo become nothing, Edler would be 35, slowing down and replaceable for less thean 5 million while Tanev's injury problems would make any gm look for someone else.

I'm not trying to make a point about about any of these players potential. We don't know what they'll look like after a season in the NHL.

My point is: You can't plug non NHL players (or backups) into key roles until they prove they're full time NHL players (which they can only prove in the NHL).

There have been thousands of promising prospects that didn't live up to expectations in the NHL.

And at the current moment Juolevi + Woo haven't proved anything in the NHL.

They might become top 4 d-man ... but they might not even become "3rd pair plugs" if their offense doesn't translate and they aren't dependable on defense.

And if Vancouver is forced to find "cheap substitutes" in a worst case scenario ... their defense is still going to be in trouble unless the cap-situation is solved:

Hugh - Myers
Benn - Biega
Cheap Substitute D5
Cheap Substitute D6

Cheap Substitute G1
Cheap Substitute G1

That still looks pretty bad.

And if you want Seattle to take on a bad contract over a young player ... VAN will have to offer a sweetener (picks and/or prospects). Which is what I said above.

A "professional GM" can fix the problem ... but he's not gonna dump Eriksson + Beagle + Roussel without a penalty, or re-sign improving players for less money.

Agree.

But you can't sign replacement top 2/4 D on the UFA market for less than $5,000,000 in a year or two (EX = Myers = 29 year old 2nd pair D = $6,000,000 x 5 years).

So if cap-space is tight the only option would be to trade for good defensemen on good contracts, which will cost a significant amount of assets.

I also expect both to progress as most prospects would ... but less than 50% of 1st round D prospects end up as top 4 D-men (about 25% don't become full time NHL players).

So it will take some luck for both of Juolevi + Woo to become impact players (and that's if we assume Hughes is a guarantee).

Hughes probably is a guarantee ... but tons of top 10 overall D have disappointed after solid Draft + 1 seasons. For example:

Fleury, Morin, Reinhart, Pouliot, Koekkoek, Siemens, Gudbranson, McIlrath, Cowen, Schenn, Alzner, etc.
