Listen to a Hawks fan talking about loop holes... Patrick Kane magically was ready for the first game of the postseason to come off LTIR after doctors said he would be out for months, and then Vermette, Timmonen, and Desjardins keep his cap space warm in the meantime until the cap goes away in the playoffs.

Lol this reminds me of somethings... oh ya... THE LIGHTNING BEING 18 MIL OVER THE CAP!
-Arizona didn't get a single game out of Pavel Datsyuk, but got Jakob Chychrun from the draft pick
-Detroit didn't get a single game out of Joe Vitale, but got one defensive prospect that has looked solid (Hronek) and one defensive prospect that is likely ruined forever due to a changing of the guard in Detroit (Cholowski)

Forget about the fact that Chychrun turned out to be better than Cholowski and Hronek. At the time they were just draft picks. Nobody knew who they’d be. Arizona took on a huge cap dump and gave up a second-round pick to move up only four positions in the draft. This would never happen today. A cap dump of that magnitude now would cost Detroit a mid to late first, and all they’d get back would be future considerations.
Datsyuk's contract was zero actual dollars because he retired from the NHL -- it was pure cap. Vitali's was LTIR and wasn't insured, so it was real dollars.
It wasn't a great trade valuewise, but they really wanted Chychrun, and supposedly were close to taking him at seven (Keller) so were looking to move up when he slid outside 10. In hindsight, they had their eye on the right guy, so good trade. But the value still seems dodgy in a vacuum.
