I think it's Matthews' time. He's the highest paid player on the team, face of the franchise, and quite frankly, this is his team. After the roster turnover this offseason, it's time to officially make this Matthews' team. I can totally see the case for giving it to Tavares or Rielly, but if it were me, making Matthews the captain is the most logical choice

Maybe the Leafs should have "sold' the captaincy, for cap space. Matthews would he taken 1m less for the captaincy or Marner. Just joking. Not sure it's that important especially since the Leafs can't decide. Matthews has five more years as Leaf, Tavares six...are the most logical candidates. Maybe my "selling" the captaincy to Reilly who needs a new contract in a few years.

marner doesn't strike me as the type of guy who wants to lead. which is fine because not every player has the ability to be a leader.

His dad thinks he should be

Matthews is the best player, the face of the franchise, and he clearly has sway in the org (asking not to play with Johnsson for example). Matthews 100% should be next captain, Rielly and Tavares with the A. Maybe Marner alternates with those 2 for an A as well.
