Marner seems to want close to Matthews money and Matthews signed for 5×11.634. This would give Marner the same term and almost as much money. It's too much, for sure, but that's the internal standard the Leafs have set.

Marner is not Matthews. He is not a Center. Does not score as many goals(they are more valuable in the league thats a fact). He is by far better than Marner. Matthews is Franchise, Marner is Elite. There is a difference

Marners best comparables
Kanes 2nd contract - 6.3Mil/5 years - 11% of cap, that is 9mil/5 years in todays money
Aho agreed he is worth 8.5mil/5 years and Aho is the same age, plays center, drives play better, is better defensively and scores more goals
Point - rumored between 8.2 and 9.2/5 and he is better than Aho and Marner.

And ok Mitch wants 11.5/5. Thats not in the realm of reality. Mitch has no neogitiation rights, no arbitration rights and has rumoredly turned town Offersheets due to term or wanting to stay. Even if that is a lie no one has done it to him. And now how many teams can actually do it. It aint happening. Mitch has lost all power.

Sorry Mitch, we have your comparables and fair deals for others around the league. Agree or keep living in a fantasy land

No one but Mitch, Paul and Dreger really give a sh** what "Marner seems to want".

Matthews is 1ST in the NHL in goals per minute over the last 3 years (since entering the NHL).

Marner isn't in the top 30 in goals per minute, assists per minute or points per minute (and he's a winger).

I specified in the description that this if Marner signs for asking price. Personally I think Dubas will cave and he will, just like he caved with Nylander. Nylanders comparables were Ehlers, and Pastrnak to a lesser extent since Pastrnak is and was better. Ehlers signed for 8 percent of the cap. Pastrnak signed for 8.9 percent. Nylander signed for 9.4 percent. Obviously, Dubas was uncomfortable with the idea of Nylander sitting out the rest of the year, and he caved. I expect Marner to be the same. It could very well turn out differently. It's just an opinion.

Sure, negotiating happens. But Nylander being worth 6.5/6 and signing for a now cap hit of 6.9(5% over payment) is vastly different than marner wanting 11.5/5 vs a 8.5/5(35% overpayment)

Pastrnak signed for 8.9 percent of the cap.
Nylander signed for 9.4 percent of the cap.

OK so:

Aho signed for 10.4 percent of the cap.

So if Dubas caves in the same way (0.5% more than comparable's) than:

Marner signs for 10.9 percent of the cap ... which is $8,900,000.

I certainly hope he caves in the way you describe.

Comparable for Marner ... he had over a PPG while playing center with worse line-mates.

Right, but Pasta was more of a high end comparable for Nylander, since he was almost a point/game player at the time of signing and Nylander puts up 60-65. Ehlers was easily the closest comparable, and he signed for eight percent. Nylander signed for 1.175 times the cap percentage of Ehlers. So if Marner signs for 1.175 times what Aho makes he'll be at 9.9 million. That's if Dubas doesn't give him his asking price, like he did with Nylander.

Nylanders career numbers were better than Pasta though.

He was coming off a 70 point season with Bergeron + Marchand which is nice. But prior to that he had 27 & 26 point seasons (around 0.5 PPG).

Nylander had two straight 60+ point seasons when he signed ... and he basically got Pasta's contract + a year of cap growth.
Ehlers also signed after one 64 point season + one 38 point season ... and took a bit less in order to guarantee his money a year early.

Nylander contract lines up extremely well with these two ... the real difference between Nylander + Pastrnak is how they played after they signed (so far).

Okay, you know what, you win this one, the stats do favour the leafs. I still think Dubas will lose again, especially if Marner holds out like Nylander did. The more concerning thing to see from a GM is to not use his leverage in negotiations, and end up getting nothing out of a player sitting out for part of a year (although he did lower the long term AAV). For your sake, I hope he surprises me.

I think Marner will have to be signed by game 1 (or close to it). Otherwise he'll be sitting out the year.

They Leafs don't have the cap-space to give Marner a huge cap-hit in year 1 of the deal like they did with Nylander.

For example ... if Marner were to sit out until December like Nylander did and then sign for a $10,000,000 AAV x 6 years ... his cap hit would look something like:

Year 1 = $14,500,000
Years 2-6 = $9,250,000

The Leafs don't have that luxury anymore.

Yeah I know. It's not a great idea anyway, you want the player to play.
