Because Matthews has scored more goals per minute than anyone in the NHL since he entered the league.

1. Matthews
2. Ovechkin

Large Gap
3. The rest

He is also about 5th in the NHL in points per minute since entering the league.

To put that in perspective ... since Marner entered the league on the same day ... he's ranks roughly:

110th in goals per minute
60th in points per minute
35th in assists per minute

And he's a winger ... you really think these guys earned the same contract?

But, rfa...no leverage, right?

Exactly ... What would the leagues number 1 goal scorer over 3 seasons get as a UFA ... considering what Panarin got ?

Marner (without leverage) deserves around 9.5 million long term ... not the same as Matthews ... my argument hasn't changed man.

But Matthews had no leverage? Right?

Correct ... he didn't have any real leverage as an RFA.

But having the highest goals per 60 in the NHL (over his first 3 seasons combined) was enough to get a fair contract.
Matthews might have also had the leverage of a potential offer sheet.
But that didn't materialize for Marner because no one wanted to give up 4 first round picks for the privilege of over-paying him.

No team is willing to give Marner the offer sheet he wants ... so what leverage do you think he has left?
Besides sitting out and losing $10,000,000.

But you said RFAs have no leverage. Why was Matthews asking for 13.8 on a long term deal? Why did he get such a high cap hit for only buying out one year of ufa? He had no leverage. RFAs never do, right?

I'm just trying to understand. You said RFA's have no leverage, and cited that as a reason that Marner won't get much money. Yet, another RFA on his team kind of get an unprecedented contract, one that made him the second highest paid guy in the NHL, and all that for only buying out one year of UFA. Just wondering how that happened if he didn't have any leverage.

He's been the best goal scorer in the league since entering the league. I said that.

Ovechkin has more goals per game. Four other players have more goals over that period. Besides the point though. You made the blanket statement that rfas have no leverage. Are you backing down on that now?

LMAO.

Nope I am not ... Players get paid based on their performance ... RFA's don't have the leverage of competing offers.

Matthews is #1 (above Ovechkin) in GOALS PER 60 MINUTES since he entered the league 3 years ago ... so he got PAID.

McDavid got paid because he was #1 in points per 60 ... Matthews got paid because he was #1 in goals per 60.

I don't really know what to sat anymore. Marner isn't in the top 30 in anything per 60 since entering the league.
