Description
1) Starting in order of how things should go down, you would want to clear Gudbranson's cap hit off the board by sending him back to his hometown. A third rounder is shown but who really cares.

2) Schultz will command a higher cap hit next year probably around $7 mil and term while approaching the wrong side of 30. Faulk is a couple years younger at 27 and makes less now as well as a potential future deal which I think the Penguins would be wiser to sign to than Schultz. This is besides me thinking Faulk is a better player in general, sorry Schultzy. Carolina has been shopping Faulk and we've been tied with interest before as Rutherford drafted him. Leads us to the other part of the deal - Jordan Staal. Not for sake of nostalgia, but I think he's still good. You can say he left because he didn't want to play behind Sid and Geno, but that was probably a smaller portion compared to wanting to play with his brother who dipped out on him, and he's still friends with the Penguins gang. Carolina, along with their new GM, are in rebuild mode. Give them immediate forward help of relatively young forwards in Rust and Bjugstad, RW and center help are badly needed there, and their goalie prospects all seem to suck. Jarry and a 1st should swing it to finalize this blockbuster.

3) Sorry Schultz, you're the casualty to get rid of Johnson. Wishful thinking the Kings would take these two for Tofolli? Maybe, but he's been shopped in the recent past. The Kings could use a 2RHD to play behind Doughty and with Martinez and they could bury Johnson on their third pair - original draft pick of theirs. Throw that pick from Gudbranson at them to top it off.

Yes, that's what I'm alluding to. I don't think Jordan Staal is in their long term plans, and they have an amazing young defesive group that Faulk is going to get phased out of, hence why he's been shopped recently.

That’s not even enough to trade Johnson

What is worse than Johnson @ 3.25 for 4 more years? Staal @ 6 for 4 more years!

You have been saying you don't want Gusev and people are overvaluing but you would rather have Staal @ 6 & Toffoli @ 4.6 (10.6), instead of Bjugs @ 4.1 & Gusev @ 4 (8.1)???

The Tofolli trade was more of going after someone who is also in a contract year that would take less to get as there was more cap space to work with after the other trades and we probably won't NOT spend to the cap. Having Staal until he's 34 isn't bad at all for what he brings, it's worth more having that type of defensive forward that can still play 19-20min a night over Bjugstad who is only meh imo, but sure, I would take Gusev at 4mil over Tofolli, but I think he gets more. I'll make another with that, but this is actually going off of past interest, that might not be there any more, but Rutherford drafted Faulk and was the one to trade for Staal.
