Description
ZAR's arbitration meeting is set for July 22nd. With just a few days left and only $800k in cap, a move is necessary. There are a few players who come to mind. Which one(s) should be moved?

1. Patric Hornqvist: 4 years left at $5.3M AAV - He is still a solid player who plays an important role; however concussions have been an issue. He also has a NMC, so he may decide to not waive at all. The odds of him being moved are slim.

2. Nick Bjugstad: 2 years left at $4.1M AAV - He underperformed last season in general, but he allows the Penguins to run 3 solid lines. If given more time to adjust to his team, he could be a very useful 3C, but if the right offer is there, an extra $4M in cap space is huge.

3. Bryan Rust: 3 years left at $3.5M AAV - He plays an all around game that is very useful. He can be put on any line and will adapt to his role. Problem with Rust is that Tanev, who plays a similar game, was just signed. This makes him more expandable, and probably the most likely to get dealt.

4. Jack Johnson: 4 years left at $3.25M AAV - He is a player who many dislike and want off the team. His value is unknown, but some believe the Pens might have to give up extra value to move him; something GMJR may not want to do.

5. Justin Schultz: 1 year left at $5.5M AAV - Moving Schultz may be wise, since, in a year from now, the Pens have many big guys to resign. However, a Schultz move would almost guarantee another trade, since there would be a huge hole in their RD. If the Pens feel like they could get great value for him, it might be the move.

6. Erik Gudbranson: 2 years left at $4M AAV - He stepped up after joining the Penguins, but $4M for a 3rd pairing dman is a lot. Problem is that not many teams would want to take him on.

What should the Penguins do to free up much needed cap space?

" a move is necessary"
no it's not. None of this is even remotely true.
They can Bury both JJ and Desmith, and clear enough space to pay ZAR 1.2 mil a year, and Pettersson 1.8 mil per.
Both fair offers on both players. ZAR will not get more than 1.2 in his hearing.
They don't need to trade anyone. They are totally cap compliant.

I mean even in your scenario they JUST fit in and have no flexibility to operate.

Problem also is they arn't going to bury either. DeSmith is a no brainer to get claimed off waivers, and it’s not worth having Jarry as backup, DeSmith has outplayed him at every turn.
JJ they are just not waiving unfortunately, especially if they have any hope of moving him at some point.

So maybe they don’t “have to” make a move, in your dream the impossible dream world...but they are going to...

Also I wouldn’t say Pettersson at 1.8 is fair outside of the ACGM universe. Would not be surprised at all to see him over 2.25...that’s probably the floor for his next deal.
If 1.8 was the number I imagine they would have locked him up already. They reportly want him with term....and they can exceed the cap in the offseason and even go into the season over the cap after all

That said, OP, my preference would be Gudbranson or JJ because I don’t want both playing on the backend, but most likely it’s Bjugstad bc they can plug McCann there. Also Bjugstad doesn’t PK and isn’t especially physical or fast.

Also worth noting they can sign ZAR and Pettersson, be over the cap and not have to worry until like October, the cap is calculated by day to day salary, not total value on roster, and it can be exceeded in the summer and in the season as well.

There is no way DeSmith clears waivers, so why would you be willing to lose a reliable backup for nothing? They most certainly need to make a trade, not to mention they will have 9 D on the main roster with Pettersson signed. There is no way to make it work WITHOUT a trade.

OP - I think they will be moving Rust & Johnson. I don't like the idea of moving Rust but they made him expendable with the Tanev signing and he will be a sweetner in a Johnson deal. I would also be content with trading away ZAR's rights with moving Johnson and keeping Rusty. That would give them 4 very good lines.

I kind of want Hornqvist to go, ZAR plays a similar game already, is much younger and much cheaper, plus teams (looking at you Fenton) will overate Hornqvist bc he's scored 20 goals in the past and look past the fact that he can't stay healthy, he's an undersized power forward, power forwards generally fall off a cliff in production right around Hornqvist's age, and Hornqvist makes more than most 20 G scorers, and he makes it for 4 more years, but he had a good World championship playing with William Nylander and Sweden's stacked team against teams like Latvia GB Italy or Austria

I think that's an assumption that someone grabs DeSmith. He's just good enough to lose by 1, he's not of starter quality and he never will be. On top of it, he wouldn't be getting any playing time in Pittsburgh. However all of that is besides the point. It is an assumption people have made that they "need" to make a move. I'm showing you how they don't. If they needed to sign everyone under contract right now, they could and still be cap compliant. They aren't forced into doing something they don't want to do. Like trade Rust.
