Habs finished 2 or 4 points out of the playoffs last year. I wouldn't be so pessimistic.

At the same time though, what's their route to the playoffs? Tampa literally set a record for wins last year, I'm guessing they'll beat out the habs. Boston cup final, and as much crap as I give Toronto, they're a very good team. Then I think Florida and Buffalo got way way better. I can't see the habs beating either of those teams out. 6th in their division is my pick.

Haven't you been saying Carolina is going to win their division? Realism isn't a strong point on here, the "Pesce is as good as Bobby Orr" ideal that exists on this site proves as much.

I believe that Carolina can win the Metro, but wouldn’t make that definitive statement. The Metro and the Central are the toughest divisions in the NHL, and no team or fan base in either of those division should claim they know what’s going to happen.

I agree that anyone saying that Pesce is Bobby Orr (even jokingly) should be removed from this site. I love Pesce, and what he does well (defense). Adding to that his, likely, NHL best contract = value.

i mean yes but i don't think anyone can say what will happen next season because every single habs player exceded expectations by a mile like who thought domi would do what he did there is a strong chance that they all regress

The Metro is not at all a tough division, you have a mixture of former dominant teams getting worse and former terrible teams getting better which makes it a crap shoot division. The best 3 teams in the East very likely could be all from the Atlantic and after that, Florida and Montreal are strong contenders for the wild card spots. I think there will be only 3 teams from the Metro in the playoffs and at least 2 Atlantic teams will finish with higher points than anyone in that division. Summary, the Atlantic is hands down the strongest division (Albeit a very top heavy division). The Central I am not sure is as strong as people think. Nashville should be good but I think Duchene is a cancer in the room, they are getting older and slower in certain areas, have some bad contracts and I don't see enough scoring upfront. And that is the best team in the division. The Jets have some major question marks, St Louis can't expect a insane historic run like they went on last year and the rest of the division is a mixture of old teams getting worse and young teams getting better.

The Pacific is the worst though. I think we can all agree on that.

As for Pesce, he doesn't have the best contract in the league. Far from it. He has a fair contract, a defensive defenceman shouldn't make more than 4 million in this current market. I'd like to see what Pesce would do if Slavin, Hamilton and Faulk were hurt. If he had to carry the load, I don't think he has the tools to do so. He's as much a product of his environment as anyone in the league. A very good player but needs a supporting cast and a system that works for his skills. He doesn't even have the best contract on your team. Slavin is a steal, as is Aho at his new price tag.

McKinnon has the best contract, Rielly has an amazing Contract, Josi's current contract is amazing. Pesce is not even close to the calibre of those elite players making way under market value wages.

No edits except putting Alzner in the minors. This is not a strong team yet. Every player would need to out preform like they did last year

I don't pay for the Athletic, and a site that has a paywall will definitely post stuff to create buzz which in my opinion skews the reporting. Its an okay site but one that I am not fully trusting of. Carolina has several great contracts but Pesce I still say has a fair contract, not a great one. His offensive shortcomings prevent him from being anything other than a supporting player. Very good defensively, yes but important offensive jobs on the team go to better players. Slavin is the star of the defence, Hamilton despite his faults is also a better player all around than Pesce. Pesce reminds me a lot of Mike Komisarek, with the right partner and in the right system he's a fantastic defensive player, out of that comfort zone, who knows how good or bad he really is.

the article was over the entire league, not just the Canes. For your benefit, he also rated the Leafs towards the top. The analysis was the performance of the player vs the contract $ and length.

Pesce conversation aside...the original comments was about the Habs. Don’t see a path they make the playoffs this year in my opinion.

I think they'll battle for a wild card. As I mentioned I think the 5 teams out of the Atlantic will make the playoffs and only 3 from the Metro.

Who those teams are in the Metro is a huge guess. Washington, Pittsburgh, Philly and Carolina are the top 4 I think but I am not sure whoever finishes 4th will have enough points to make the dance.
