Created by: CheechYou
Team: 2019-20 San Jose Sharks
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 18, 2019
Published: Jul. 18, 2019

Description
Suomela's a young Finnish prospect half the league coveted before SJ signed him. Has middle-six center upside.

Gregor's a young 20yr old center with bottom-six center upside. Sharks have a lot of competition at center and could use a different opportunity with the Russian and Swedish SJ infiltration.

Suomela is older than Kapenen. Fairly significantly and can barely be called a prospect. The other guy seems okay. Not enough though.

Besides I doubt the Leafs move Kapanen. They have enough space for marner.

The point of getting Horton along with Kapanen is that the value going back will be decreased by a bit too.

Another LTIR trade which doesn't affect the Leafs for San Jose cap.

The Leafs get no benefit from the sharks taking him.

A 25 year old is barely a prospect. Kapanen is 22 (23 next week).

Besides the Leafs just locked him up and don't need to trade him. And if they did it would be for d help

1) There's 5.3 million beneficial reasons for the Sharks to take on Horton for the Leafs. Most ppl are so entirely dismissive of this reality of a business, it's mind-boggling.

2) It's still a prospect if the player is transitioning from overseas play to the smaller rink and more physical play of the NHL. Takes a year or two.

1) I suppose. But the Leafs have shown zero interest in trying to save money in this way, and instead used their finances to take advantage in the opposite situation. Also it's 3.6 million

2) he is in his prime. It's as simple as that. If he needs time to get used to the north american ice he is wasting prime years doing it.

1) Thanks, didn’t check to see how much exactly Horton’s getting paid for his last year.

2) He's not wasting his prime years. He led the entire Finnish league in scoring in 2017-18. He has spent one year transitioning to the NA rink. He's ready to assume a 3rd-line center role in the NHL right now at just 25yrs old. He's just approaching his prime.

The Leafs just paid like 8 million dollars in signing bonuses to guys that won't play for the team next year (Zaitsev/Kadri/Brown). Dubas does not care about Horton, and MLSE won't even bother.

That's my point though. There's a quota for these sort of things. Some organizations are extra stingy (i.e. Sens), while others such as the Leafs are less so given their following and income, but even they look out to save whenever possible with these things.

There has just been absolutely zero indication with any of the Leafs moves for years, that they care about the salaries of the players. And they surely have no history of losing a trade to move salary. It's 100% about the cap hit for the Leafs, and Horton has no effect on the cap. He's not a negative or positive value for us. He's just there.
