I agree with this. Butcher has tremendous upside and is one a nice deal. Doesn't make sense for NJ IMO, Ottawa would be like "sure...can we put this through immediately?"

Although that's a fair return for Copp I doubt the Jets make that trade.

I actually like this trade for the jets. If Copp is awarded a 1 year deal in arbitration is he a UFA next year? Maybe the jets could re-sign Vatanen and Mueller looks like a decent NHL dman.

On paper right now the jets look like they are super weak on D and they might be, but there is some serious potentail on the roster and in the system. Niku is a former AHL dman of the year and is gonna be a real shot at an everyday dman in teh NHL; Poolman has a modern NHL dman skill set; Pionk is young and has something to prove; Beaulieu is a journey man, but he played well for the jets last year and is coming in at 1 mill per; Samberg looks like he'll be good and Stanley is coming along slowly but surely.
This year might be a slight step back for the jets, but their d-core still looks promising

If Copp is awarded a 1 year deal; he would still be RFA with arbitration rights next year. UFA is either older than 27, has played in the league for 7 years, or not give a qualifying offer from their original team. I believe*
