Initial Creation Date: Jul. 19, 2019
Published: Jul. 19, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Kreider for Shenn came from NY needing a 2c. Blues need to sign Barbashev and Sundqvist still, so this gives them some extra cap flexibility all while swapping 2 expiring contracts. Dont love it, but it was different than the continuous Avs trades.

I think the Schenn/Kreider deal would make sense if the Blues needed to shed some cap, but it’s looking like we will have enough to sign Barbashev, Sundqvist, and Edmundson (roughly $9.3m I think). If you end up clearing enough cap, I could see a separate deal involving Schenn for picks/prospects. You guys turned down Buchnevich and Hajek for Schenn, but maybe Namestnikov (no retention) and Hajek would work? I think Names’ middle-six C,LW flexibility would be nice on our roster while giving Thomas more of a chance to center in our top 6.

I dont like any of these trades, but I am most against trading DeAngelo for mediocre draft picks. If we need to dump contracts and all we could get for Stome was a 5th, so be it. Namestikov for a 6th? If we had to. These are not core players. But DeAngelo cant be given away and Kreider is too good to give up for nothing. Schenn would be fine if he were signed long term but he'll need a contract the Rangers might not be able to afford.

Imagine seeing Burakovsky go for a 2nd and 3rd on a 1 yr deal and think.....Strome & Fast gets a 5th only

And Namestnikov gets ....not even that.

And then literally trade the best transition defenseman in all of hockey for .... what are you trading him for?

Then say

You know Kreider's good but what if got a Kreider that's not great at defense and more expensive instead?

95% agree. DeAngelo just showed us what he’s capable of. Doesn’t make him the best transition defenseman in hockey... yet.
