SJ - TOR Blockbuster Trade - Marner for Labanc Package

Created by: CheechYou
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 19, 2019
Published: Jul. 19, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
For TOR:

Labanc is basically a poor man's Marner and only going to get better. He's only on the best deal in the NHL (maybe in history https://www.fearthefin.com/2019/7/12/20691551/2019-nhl-free-agency-kevin-labanc-san-jose-sharks-doug-wilson-salary-cap).

Chmelevksy is in SJ's top-6 and a young 20yr old prospect with tremendous upside. Arguably SJ's best prospect.

Gregor is a young prospect with 3rd line center upside. This trade makes sense because SJ has a logjam of young LHed centers poised to claim roster spots, and most of them are Russian, so Gregor's the odd Canadien dman out.

Dillon is a supremely underrated defenseman going back the other way. His deal expires next season, so the young guns can take over his spot since he's set to get paid, and TOR can use their extra cash saved with this Marner deal to make a mid-season trade with MINN for Spurgeon and re-sign him long-term.

Dell is an upgrade over Hutchinson as an expiring UFA backup for Freddie. He's poised for a bounce-back season in his 20-odd games for TOR. Mostly a cap-casualty for SJ.

Dubas couldn't make the Marner deal better, so he made the Marlies better.

Dell was worse than Sparks last year. Think the Leafs prefer the four first rounders.

It's just poor value for Toronto. If Marner is moved, an impact, young, #1 D would likely be in the package. If not, then a young forward of high quality +.

Don't see a deal to be made between these two teams, but you should be including your best trade chips. If I don't see Meier/Couture it's an easy no.

Labanc is not a poor man's Marner.

They're just in different tiers of players. Do the above package with Meier instead of Labanc and it's more reasonable.

Also a prospect with third line upside should carry little to no value

That’s a worse trade for San Jose. I’d rather Meier than marner in the end. Meier has a different game, continues improving and has size, additionally he seems committed to winning and signing fair deals, not 10+ mil deal that isn’t worth marner in the end I think unless he consistently puts up 80-100+

Lebanc ,Chemelvski and the 1st are the only base pieces with any value in a deal for an Elite top line Center Prospect .

if you were trading for a lesser player maybe dillon ,dell and gregor have such low value in this situation its not worth it as you'd get more return for them all individually .

Lebanc , Chemelvski , Dahlen , 2021 1st , 2022 1st and a conditional 2nd that becomes a 1st if Marner signs over 5 years

SJS gets an Elite Center Prospect giving up middle 6 players, 2 first's and a 2nd unless Marner gets a max term deal then an additional 1st .

TML has all the leverage , they'll trade Nylander at a loss long before they give away Marner
i think bringing Kerfoot in was part of the transition and that Nylander will be gone by season opener .
if i was SJS that's who i'd be targeting as Nylander fits your immediate needs or much less cost

Do you realize how rare it is for players to put up consistently 80-100 points? Here is a list of players who have put up more than 80 points 5 or more times in the last 10 years (http://hkref.com/tiny/bbtTz)

Crosby (7), Ovechkin (5), Stamkos (5). End list. (Giroux, Kane, Kessel and Tavares have done it 4 times).

I doubt he consistently puts up 80-100 points because almost nobody does.

Who is an elite center prospect? Marner is not a center or a prospect.

And Kerfoot, a center, has nothing to do with Nylander, a winger...Kerfoot is Kadri's replacement, which, again, has nothing to do with Nylander.
