At 3 years, this is aav cap value IMO.
I am sure he wants more, I want a million dollars too but that doesnt mean I'm getting it.

Why not give him 1 year at that cap?

Hey here's a sweet idea: offer sheet Marner for the 11-12 million you think he's worth.
The intelligent Leafs fans won't complain.

Same song and dance next year, 3 years give us an evaluation period to asses potential value in future deal

I prefer Marner in 3 or 8 year deal only I think

Marner won't sign any offer sheet because he doesn't want to leave TOR this offseason. Marner knows they'll just take the compensation if he signs a 10M+ offersheet

Well honestly I think Marner’s camp only wants 6-7 million dollars for 1 year. He’s already proved to be improving at an elite level every year, so if he hits 90+ points again next season he will deserve to get paid.

Marner’s dad desperately wants Mitch to leave Toronto.

This is a fair point.
Having Marner on a 3 year deal will give proper evaluation going into later years.

He'll leave Toronto, but as an UFA entering his prime unless any team signs him at 5x11M. But what team will give up 4 1sts for a player who'll leave the team in 5 years

I know this.
I was mostly making a point about overpaying an RFA via offer sheet, and in the same breath giving up the compensation a team has to when paying the 11-12 million that some people think is fair value for said RFA.

Makes no sense.

I know this is going to be a very unpopular opinion but...Marner isn't worth the 2nd tier offer sheet idea either.
Think about it: a team overpays him at 10.5 and then still has to give up prospects.

I get it, most people would want Dubas to match a second tier offer sheet but let's not kid ourselves about 10.5 million.
It's still an overpay.

Trust me I know I don’t want him over 9.75 but I also don’t think he’s going below 8.5

Sorry Trickster that is one horrid trade for the Isles. And the logic behind it....doesn't hold. Rangers can still move upcoming UFAs Kreider and Names to get cap space.

Honestly I don’t think DeAngelo would be interested in coming to Toronto. He is a New Jersey native and generally Americans don’t want to play in Canada.

Isles can do better and I think that they're looking for a forward (probably a RW) instead; the package for De Angelo might work. As for the Rangers, they'll move some of Buchnevich/Namestnikov/Strome/Kreider to get under the cap. They've built a pretty good defense and assume Shattenkirk and Smith are on their last legs, so they want to keep the young guys intact.

DeAngelo is solid tough puck moving D man.
I think its worth it.

And RE: Islanders trade, there is value there.
Mayfield is good bottom pair D, nothing special.

Cap space can be it's own reward as well.

Yeah, I think DeAngleo would prefer NYC...but as RFA what choice would he have if traded. Just don't think it's a good trade for the Rangers....keep their young Dman.

Interesting that some ACGMs think Backes , an American, on a Cup contender Bruins waives his M NTC for all the places Ottawa. Now that is never going to happen.

I'm not saying you are wrong. I do think the NYR organization has an affinity for swedes and russians so keeping Buchnevich is something they want?

That leaves Kreider and Strome. Is it possible to move one or both without moving a young player with them?
