Yeah but you managed to trade him for an even worse contract while giving up Lauko and a 2nd tears of joy

Backes for Abdelkader is close and DET might slightly prefer Abdelkader but throwing in a good prospect and a 2nd is crazy. Backes/Lauko/2nd for a 6th is closer but Boston probably still says no.

I would give up Abdelkader for Backes straight up. Abdelkader is our worst contract.

One last push?! The Bruins are the most coddled team by the league and its 'officials' in the history of sports in the entire world. You could have a lineup full of beer leaguers and a coach on fentanyl and still be handed the cup by the NHL

Yeah I mean I think Boston would do it because the buyout/buried $ are better but it's very close

For DET I would do it to get rid of my worst long term commitment. Need money for future prospects deals and I am throwing stupid money at Barkov when he hits UFA.

i hope this is a typo. backes/lauko/and a 2nd for a 6th is closer? lauko looks like he could make the team out of camp this year. and if he doesnt ide bet money he does next year. backes and a 2nd for a 6th might happen. but thats still an overpay to get out of his cap hit, again i hate mentioning that he is only owed 5m cash over the next 2 years. thats appealing to teams who are trying to hit the floor and absorb the cap but pay less real money.

Both are bad contracts, but I would argue that Abdelkader's is even worse due to term. Why is Boston sweetening it even further?

Lauko is definitely not making the team out of camp, he's maybe 6th in line in terms of prospects, he had a good playoff run and I hope he makes it next year but let's not overrate him . I know. Backes has a good cap floor contract but no floor teams this year need him outside of Ottawa and I doubt Melnyk takes on 5M in salary, more likely next year after 7/1 when it's 1M salary/6M hit.

Yep completely get it from DET's point of view, just think the ~2.5M in savings for Boston are worth it for the next two years, then buy him out.

Lauko was being talked up after this past development camp, this isnt my own talking up a prospect this is the team and team reporters talking about him.

Backes - 2yr @ $6 million hit ($5 million total actually owed)
Abdelkader - 4yrs @ $4.25 million hit ($13.75 million total actually owed)

For some reason Boston is going to add while also having to pay more in real money while getting an equally worse player?

I wouldn't count him out, he's a dark horse to make the team. Lauko can play a 4th line role on this team a la Marchand did when he started. Now I'm not saying Lauko will be Marchand, but he's a skilled guy that's good on the forecheck and brings energy. Now I'll admit, Lauko would need an insane camp, but he could be a wild card on the left side of the bottom six.

I think he impressed and I think he could be a good player for them, like I said I wouldn't trade him to dump Backes but the idea that a 2nd is enough for Backes is just wrong. I'm not the biggest Sweeney fan but he would've done that in a heartbeat. It'll be a first or a second/prospect.

Yeah I just think given his age lack of pro experience they want to give him a year. I think he could be a very good middle 6er and I wouldn’t trade him to dump Backes. All I’m saying is not to overrate him too much based on one good camp/playoffs. Could be a good trade piece.

Depends on how dire the cap situation needs are. if you trade out miller or moore you dont have to trade backes. It HELPS to trade backes but you dont HAVE to. Toronto HAD to trade marleaus cap hit away. The had literally no other choice if they wanted to even attempt to keep most of that team together.

Again, dark horse. Do I think he'll make it? no because it would take a perfect storm, but I do think he could be a serviceable 3rd/4th line guy...as long as he can handle the strength part of things.

Even with a Miller trade you still have to either play hardball with Carlo/McAvoy or bridge them, and even then you still are very tight up against it. If Sweeney was offered Backes/2nd for a 6th and he turned it down that's brutally bad given what JoJo and Dzingel went for.

oh im not saying i wouldnt do that. if it was backes and a 2nd for a 6th ide have that happen yesterday. im saying that they have slight leverage because it doesnt NEED to happen you know what i mean? its not like we are at even cap and need to move his deal to fit mcavoy and carlo in. both players will get resigned. im sure itll be a bridge for mcavoy and a real deal for carlo.
