Can this setup compete in the Pacific

Created by: BeterChiarelli
Team: 2019-20 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 22, 2019
Published: Jul. 22, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Rather, is this team better than Anaheim, Arizona, Los Angeles, and Vancouver?

Personally, I think it hinges on the 2nd line being able to perform like an NHL 2nd line and Smith/Koskinen getting a bit lucky.

I felt Arizona would be on par or better. Thanks.

Unconvinced in Vancouver's blueline and depth beyond their top-6, but that's literally the pot calling the kettle black so yeah. I'll wait on Boeser to make that distinction.

I think that if you load up all of your top guns on the first line like that, you'll be lucky to win more than 14 away games. In any event, you should be better than the Kings but I don't see you getting past either Anaheim or Arizona. And Vancouver adding J. T. Miller strikes me as a better improvement than Edmonton adding Neal and Granlund, although Brassard would make a difference.

Depends what we get out of Neal, but i think we should shoot for Lafrenierre this year. Our defense has a hole at 2RHD and shaky goaltending. Probably can beat out LA, but beating out VAN, ANA, and ARI would require major improvements.

The only way I see the top 6 not being "loaded" is if you swapped Puljujarvi and Neal. There isn't a ton of options internally, and I still think that major movement in the draft picks / prospects department is unwise for this team. That's why I mentioned it definitely hinges on Benson clicking in the top-6 and Puljujarvi discovering something that resembles NHL play.

Realistically though, I dont know what it would take to get this team to win more than 15 games on the road, and I doubt they'll do that until they're a serious playoff contender. Every advantage at home must be exploited.

Have you guys tried Draisaitl with Nugent-Hopkins?

I think it's only happened once or twice and it seems like both Holland and Tippet are committed to having McDavid and Draisaitl playing together again.

If that were the plan of action, I'd look at pursuing Gusev instead of Brassard and bring Marody up to play #3C and keep Benson in the AHL for the extra year. I think that the Pilers would need a better, or rather, established winger to play up with McDavid.

It just strikes me that putting Draisaitl with McDavid makes the Oilers too easy to play against. Most teams now have two different lines that can play against a team's top offensive crew, and splitting your top two makes it very difficult for the other team,
