High than I thought it would be. If it was a 2 year deal it would make more sense...

I believe if Mueller signed a 2 year deal he would be a UFA after, since he would have 7 years in the NHL, so the Devils probably paid more this year so they still have his rights next off-season.

I think right now the Devils top two pairs are set. P.K. and Greene/Vatanen and Severson and Greene/Vatanen. That leaves 4 guys for 2 spots: Meuller, Butcher, Carrick, and Ty Smith. Only Carrick is RHD, which will definitely give him the inside track to the 3rd pair. I think Meuller has the edge right now. Butcher has been a PP specialist and pretty terrible at even strength. Ty Smith is a huge part of the future, but I think Butcher is still a little better right now.

The top 4 on the right handed side is great with Subban and Severson; they can both play 20-24 minutes a night. My problem is how unreliable defensively Vatanen, Butcher, Carrick, Severson, and Smith (I am assuming here since he never played in the NHL yet) are/ will be. It is not a great sign on the left when the most reliable left handed defender last year was a 35 year old Andy Greene.

I would love to see Shero get a Edmundson/ Nurse/ McNabb type of defense-man, maybe trade Vatanen or even Butcher, to balance out the top 4 and get someone is more of a stay at home defender for the top 4. Since, in my opinion, last year it felt like the Devils were running 5 forwards when Butcher- Vatanen were paired together.

I've been saying since the acquisition of Subban that they should look to trade Butcher. His value is still relatively high, but that'll change when he's relegated to the 3rd pair or maybe even the press box. I think Greene is incredibly under appreciated as a stay-at-home D. He can still skate and handle the puck under pressure. Greene and P.K. should bring out the best in each other. Severson had a career year last season and I like his upside a lot. Vatanen could prove immensely valuable if he can stay healthy, something he didn't do last season.
