Description
Pretty sure Treliving lost the trade with the Oilers as I have way more faith in Neal returning to 20G, 40P form playing alongside McDavid or RNH, but perhaps Lucic can fit in better than Neal did here (on the 3rd/4th line) and make the team better not through his actual play, but the confidence having one of the toughest guys in the league on your team brings to the other guys on the roster. Key remaining items on the to-do list include fitting Tkachuk, Bennett, and Rittich by moving out some money, as well as bolstering the top six forward group if the right deal exists out there.

RFA's
Tkachuk - Comments on Mathews deal leads me to believe he is wanting a short term deal at UFA $. Treliving drives a hard bargain and gets him on the 6.75M Gio/Johnny cap for the first three years and Tkachuk's camp gets Skinner money (9M) for each year after the third. 5 x 7.65M.
Bennett - Had a great playoffs and Treliving's comments lead me to believe he sees the guy as a long term supporting piece for this Flames team. I think Bennett enjoys the new role he's found on this competitive team and wants to be here for a while, but also probably still feels he can live up to his draft pedigree and be a top 6 forward in the league. I think they settle on a 2 x $2.75M bridge deal.
Rittich - Looks like he is developing well and went from solid backup to platoon starter over the course of last season. Likely wants a short term deal betting on himself to cement his starting role on Calgary over a couple seasons. Signs a short term deal similar to Gibson's second contract (3 @ 3.3% of cap) but for two years. 2 x 2.75M.
Mangiapane - Signs a short term extension looking to build on his solid back half of last season. 2 x 925k.

UFA's
I think the Flames are done UFA shopping after getting a tandem goaltender and some depth pieces for the press box / AHL team.

Trades
I've commented on each one I've made within the trade itself. Overall, the Flames need to move out a bit of money and ideally find an upgrade to the top six forward group. I think Kylington, draft pick(s), and Frolik/Brodie are available in some kind of package for a mid to late 20's top 6 forward.
I thought about at a couple trades:
Kylington + 2020 2nd + Frolik = Zucker: similar to the Zucker for Frolik + first deal at last years deadline but the Wild get a player closer to the show with less chance of busting that a late first in Kylington. I didn't pull the trigger on it as it forces the Flames to move out Czarnik in another deal get enough cap space and hurts their depth too much for the upgrade to the top 6.
Kylington + Frolik + Gillies = Hoffman: Florida is looking for help on defense, may want to bring in competition for the backup position and perhaps can't afford to extend both Hoffman and Dadonov next season alongside of a few of their other RFA's. Frolik is a good middle six winger and has familiarity with their new coach and would also be cheaper to keep around for a couple more years, while Kylington is a LHD they can keep long term as he works his way up the lineup. I didn't think Florida would feel it's enough as they need Hoffman to push their way into a wild card spot in the east.
Overall, I think the Flames don't find what they're looking for via trade at the moment, keep the 3M line & Brodano together to start the season, and try to upgrade the top 6 closer to the deadline.

Lineup
I think Dube forced his way into the opening night lineup with his play in the AHL last season. I paired him with two of our toughest players (as last year he got pushed around at the NHL level and subsequently injured) and moved Jankowski to the fourth line with Ryan to make room for him. I'm not sure which of these two now fourth line centers will move to RW. I assumed Ryan due to him being smaller and a RHS but he'll be taking most of the draws. I could see whomever between Valimaki & Kylington who doesn't make the starting lineup may be sent down to tear it up in the AHL instead of being a scratch in order to get them ice time while they bring up Davidson as the popcorn muncher on D but for now I've left the player on the NHL roster under the assumption they will instead rotate them both into the lineup.

Trades

CGY
  1. 2020 5th round pick (ANA)
Additional Details:
Calgary moves out a player they can no longer afford for a mid-late pick.
ANA
  1. Stone, Michael
Additional Details:
Anaheim gets a solid defender who is right handed (something they desperately need) and good enough to play second pairing minutes in a pinch for a fairly low price due to Calgary's cap situation. Stone perhaps doesn't have Anaheim in his 15 team NTC, but also would probably waive anyway for a location where he'd be an everyday player to rehab his value ahead of UFA. Anaheim can also flip him for a better pick near the deadline if they are trending to miss the playoffs.
2.
CGY
  1. 2020 7th round pick (FLA)
Additional Details:
The Flames feel like Gillies has been passed by the other goaltenders in their organization and moves him for a late pick to a place where he'll have a better chance to play.
FLA
  1. Gillies, Jon
Additional Details:
Florida brings in Gillies to compete with Montembeault for the NHL backup role. They have similar stats at the NHL small sample size as well as in the AHL last year. Gillies has had more success in the AHL in prior seasons. Florida elects to have their younger prospect compete with a slightly older prospect rather than just handing him the job and spends a late pick to set up this competition.

I see where you are going here and agree its probably what will happen. Personally, I would rather see us move Brodie and keep Stone as he is much harder to play against (when healthy).

The big mistake I see and have been saying for a while is keeping the 3 m line together...

- Tkachuk is 100% a top 6 player (wouldn't mind seeing him on the top line while johnny gets sheltered on the 2nd).

- BUT when Backs is on the 2nd with PP time his numbers drop significantly! He is probably one of the leagues best 2-way 3rd line centres and an incredibly effective PK specialist but when moved up he loses a step and ends up as a mediocre 2nd line centre.

- Then Frolik... When paired with Backs on the 3rd line and given PK time he excels! But on the 2nd line, he becomes a below-average winger...

Move Backs and Frolik back where they belong and build a real second line starting with Tkachuk or maybe even Johnny!

The key here is to be playoff-ready! To get into the second round and beyond! We will not make it with the 3 m line as our 2nd line...

I think Brodie as a 2/3D at $4.6M is way more valuable than Stone at $3.5M as a 5/6D even if he is more physical. Brodie + Giordano ends up with Giordano in Norris contention each of the two full seasons they've played together.

I agree that they need to find an upgrade for the top 6 to pair with Tkachuk. I think we are stuck with Backlund in the #2C spot however, unless Dube takes a massive leap forward and plays like a poor man's Brayden Point. If something like that happened then I expect Tkachuk + Dube + playoff Bennett to be a good second line. I explored the idea of moving Frolik + Kylington + pick(s) to acquire an offensive top 6 winger capable of 50 points or more (Zucker, Hoffman, Granlund if he still doesn't fit in in Nashville, perhaps even Toffoli) but expect it would happen closer to the deadline. 3M is a great line in the regular season over a large sample size, but like you said and as we seen in the playoffs it makes it easy to shut down the Flames offense in the playoffs as pretty much everything has to run through Gaudreau's line. I believe the upgrade to the top 6 happens with a deadline deal this year.

My thoughts are to take our top 4 players... and split them between 2 lines... although this will weaken the top line it will also open up the top lines ice time as we will then have 2 lines for the other teams to stop... make that 3 with 2 man duos that should or will pair well! Try Chucky with Mony on top pair (large first lines make teams much harder to play - copying the ducks and sharks here) then we get Johnny (protected on the second line - like others his size in the past) with Lindholm and that leaves Backs and Frolik as your 3rd line pair (arguably 1 of the best duos on the 3rd line in the league!)... Now we need a support player on each line... left are Bennett - Lucic - Dube - Mags - Janko and Ryan... So my lines...

Chucky - Mony - Bennett
Lucic - Lindholm - Johnny
Dube - Backs - Frolik
Mags - Janko - Ryan
