Lets Discuss Something - Devils have 8 signed Dmen

Created by: Wings41326

Description
The Devils Signed Carrick to a 2yr deal. And now Mueller to a 1yr deal. Smith, in my opinion, definitely makes the opening night roster. That leaves the Devils with 8 defenseman. Depth is a great thing to have. But having 8 defenseman signed, does this mean someone is going to be dealt? Roster depth line-up is as follows...

Vatanen - Subban
Butcher - Severson
Greene - Smith

Carrick
Mueller

You have to think that now Vatanen may be dished. Also Greene/ Mueller at TDL. But what's Sheros plan? 82 game season. I'm sure we aren't paying Mueller and Carrick to be the 7th/8th guys at the cost we signed them.

I mean Carrick is used to sitting and you have enough cap for it to not be a problem

I definitely think that Vatanen gets moved. There are plenty of teams that need second pair D-Men and could give up some decent draft capital, or the Devils work him into a package for a LW. I’d be very surprised to see him on the roster come Opening Night.

Correct. But, is there an underlying agenda for this?

Honestly, I think Ray is going to keep 8 D in-case he has to shatter the "In-case of emergency break glass" and hit the Trade Hall button. Vats and Hall could recoup a decent package at the deadline or at any time during the season. I don't want that to happen at all but GM's have to plan for that. Also, I think Smith is going to make the team, but you have to plan for if he isn't ready.

With Smith in the fold, that gives us 3 smaller than usual offensive minded dmen. Vat being a UFA at the end of the year, also being older than our future of Butch and Smith makes him the odd man out. Who do you think we deal him for or what team would need his services?

I keep leaning towards Winnipeg. He’d easily slot in as RD on their second pair. Hell, he could probably play LD with Byfuglien on the top pair. They Devils could pull some picks out of it, or package Vats with some prospects and picks in a package for Ehlers.

Id like to see vats for winnipegs 1st, we've kicked tires on backes, and its a very deep draft - having 3 firsts opens up a lot of opportunity to bring in an impact player (unite the hughes bros, trade for a highly touted rfa, take from rebuilding teams, etc.)

Everybody besides subban and greene could potentially be dealt. Greene is 37, and the devils seemingly have a new injury every game. Ty smith is also a teenager. Will butcher may have a few healthy scratches if his skating and endurance remains the same as it was last year. There are going to be quite a few healthy scratch nights for that left side regardless of a trade.
