CLARKSON TRADE IS MASTERFUL FOR BOTH TEAMS

Created by: F50marco
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 23, 2019
Published: Jul. 23, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This is literally the benefit of trading for/away players with LTIR contracts.

Leafs get to exceed the salary cap by enough to be able to sign Marner now and Vegas doesn't have to worry about needing to exceed the salary cap anymore and is cap compliant. WIN/WIN scenario at its best.

Bravo Dubas for thinking outside the box and bravo to McPhee for not trading Clarkson and a 1st for a 7th.

''Leafs get to exceed the salary cap by enough to be able to sign Marner now'' I thought a team cannot exceed salary cap by more than 10% during summer. Explain me that .

Dubas had little to do with this move. Has Pridham written all over it.

Listen, whomever's brainchild it is, is besides the point really. Dubas gets props for being the one in charge of the people who thought of it. Just like any "boss" would.

I know that but they cannot sign Marner anymore during summertime. LTIR is only good when season's open. Marner won't be able to sign until season start. I think Toronto want to precipitate an offer sheet.

Hey, can you explain me how this helps the leafs exactly ? I mean if they are written off on LTIR, then how does that raise the salary cap ? I mean it remains the same doesn't it ?

One more time... Clarkson and Horton can go on offseason ltir at any time!!! Not sure what part you are not understanding here. Leafs can get relief from now till the playoffs start whenever they feel it is necessary.

They can still sign him perfectly fine, now they can also sign him after the season starts. We can go up to ~92 million and the Leafs are at 82 right now

It doesn’t help the leafs. The theory is that it allows us to get full relief. The easiest way to get full relief on ltir is to have your team as close the the cap as possible when putting players on ltir. This trade allows the leafs to put 10.55m on ltir. This theory is broken because the leafs need to be at the cap with both players on ltir.

The 10 % cushion only applies to teams during the off season. The LTIR can apply at any time during the year. They are not reflective of each other. Being able to exceed the cap due to LTIR and teams having 10% cushion in the offseason are two different things.

Example - Habs could spend approx 90M in cap right now if they wanted to but by the time the season starts, they have to be at 81.5M maximum. LTIR lets you exceed the 81.5M by the amount of those players contracts if you are already at the ceiling.

LTIR just lets the teams exceed the salary cap by the amount that player minus how much they were below the cap. So if Toronto is at 81M they can place Horton and Clarkson on LTIR for 10.55M extra to exceed the cap by. So their cap could be 81+10.55 = 91.55M if they want. (Assuming they sign Marner to 10M, they'll be cap complaint.)

I still think that nobody can be put on LTIR during summertime. So if the Leafs sign Marner now, they will exceed cap by more than 10 %. This move postpone Marner signature after the start of the season. Maybe this is why they did that.

No offense but who cares what you think? You are misunderstanding the rule and its very obvious.

The rule is right here on CF:

Can LTIR be used in the off-season?
Yes, LTIR can be used in the off-season while the 10% off-season cushion is active. LTIR in the off-season is calculated using the basic equation outlined above, which permits a team to exceed the off-season salary cap. To use off-season LTIR the team must provide doctors proof that the player in question will continue to be injured at the beginning of the regular season for 10 NHL games and 24 calendar days.

At the start of the season the teams LTIR relief & ACSL is recalculated when the 10% cushion is removed.

Leafs could sign Marner to a 10M contract and be compliant by the start of the year.

Ok forget that I didn't know that LTIR could be applied during summertime. I still don't understand why Vegas and TML did that trade.

Ok I understand now..... It felt confusing since Cap Friendly doesn't let you go over the limit of cap funds if you have a player in LTIR, it just deducts it...which makes it difficult to understand the Clarkson situation since it won't matter here

@Maj @Bigphil

Don't feel bad. 10 minutes before the Clarkson trade I wasn't sure either. I was able to confirm with Banks in one of the forum threads how it works correctly.

LTIR is ******* complicated! My explanation above is accurate but its also still very simplified. There are other factors like ACSL that make things even more complicated.

Long story short: this trade makes the Leafs able to sign Marner now if its for max 10.5M and it gets Vegas the necessary room to be cap compliant if they decided to start the season right now.

Its doesn't change anything for Marner. Its changes everything for Leafs. The salary cap only effects the team, not the player. Marner doesn't care if the cap is 81.5M or 100M. He just wants to get paid. Leafs now have the ability to sing him at approx 10.5m and be ready to start the year (cap compliant).
