Vatanen = Brodie
Zacha > Bennett

So the 2nd round pick should go the other way, no?

Exactly. Neither of them produce much and Zacha is better defensively.

Bud look at Zachas point totals and compare them to Bennetts.

Zacha is defensively sound. Bennet also has defensive upside but more offensive capability (small sample size in both their nhl careers). A change of scenery could do both justice is my end game here. Brodie is a much bigger body than Vatanen. Hence that portion of the trade. NJ already has Butcher and Smith as undersized dmen.
I added the 2nd because im not sure Calgary would think of doing this right away. Just a sweetener. Maybe a low lvl prospect instead?

How does he have more offensive capability if they have produced the same numbers 3 years in a row?

Not really. While Zacha plays primarily a defensive role, he still scores more ppg. Also gets less time on power play.

Bennett
2016-17: 26 pts, 81 gp (0.32 ppg)
2017-18: 26 pts, 82 gp (0.32 ppg)
2018-19: 27 pts, 71 gp (0.38 ppg)

Zacha
2016-17: 24 pts, 70 gp (0.34 ppg)
2017-18: 25 pts, 69 gp (0.36 ppg)
2018-19: 25 pts, 61 gp (0.41 ppg)

Zacha plays more premium position (center), is a great defensive 3C, a top-5 penalty killer statistically, and a year younger.

There is no question, Zacha > Bennett.

The Vats / Brodie difference may be more about team needs. Pretty much a wash in my eye.

I'm a huge Devils fan and appreciate Zacha's talents on D, I think he still has yet to hit his Offensive ceiling but hes been in the league for 3 seasons and doesnt have more than 30 goals (sitting at 29 rn).

PPG is important no doubt, but I think Bennett makes a tad more of an impact than Zacha would for 5v5
