Habs fans an idea for next offseason

Created by: BeterChiarelli
Team: 2019-20 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 24, 2019
Published: Jul. 24, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Just spitballing on an idea that could occur anytime the season ends, be it the draft or before July 1st.

I know the Habs have a hole at LD and Edmonton is in desperate need of scoring wingers. Obviously, there are still positional issues for both teams after making the trade, but I'm more concerned about value and whether or not both teams do this. Does either team need more coming back?

How close are we talking, and I mean right down to a 7th Round Pick if need be: does either side need to add?

If I'm Bergevin I'd take that trade as is now.

The only reason Edmonton wouldn't do it NOW per-say is the giant hole it leaves on the blueline. I think Jones needs time to grow into a top-4 role for this to even work.

I'm noticing that the immediacy in the replies AND that Bergevin would be best to do this trade is suggesting a sway in Montreal's favour. Are we taking something like a 4th Round Pick going back with Drouin to Edmonton?

Check. Drouin's record. He doesn't seem to be a "scoring" winger which is the purpose of the trade.

The high-water mark being 53 points is far from ideal, but I think that recognizing that Nurse isn't anything more than a good top-4 defender who will want north of $6.5M next season is a key point. The other being that beyond one season in Tampa Bay, Drouin hasn't played with the best of NHL centermen.

Still, 53 points a season in the situation he's been in, I think that could be a gamble worth taking if he's put alongside either McDavid or Draisaitl, ESPECIALLY given his cap hit for the foreseeable future.

1 for 1 is fair. The reason MTL do this is because we already have Tatar Lehkonen Byron LW, and Domi will be moved at the wing in the future.

That would make sense for the Habs but maybe not right now. Drouin deserves another chance + we have Mete/Kulak/Chiarot/Rielly all signed one way (LHD).
I feel like the value is good for both side but I'm an habs fan so I do not have seen Nurse played a lot.

Agree. MTL depth is at Center (Danault,KK,Poehling,Domi,Suzuki) and at LW (Tatar,Drouin,Lehko,Byron). With domi at LW one of tatar or Drouin could be use in a trade.

It's a trade next off season right? If Dourin pots 25 goals and 60+ points this year I'd say no and keep him.
Even right now it would be a hard trade to make. Maybe both teams add more to make it work.

It doesn't need to happen now but the value could change quite a bit in a year. Right now I think its pretty even. Edmonton imo has a pretty solid defense and Montreal could some younger D. But Edmonton could use some offense which Montreal has some they could spare. Montreal has had Drouin on the trading block for a while now and maybe it's because he has lived up to his full potential. Where ever Edmonton chooses to put him with McDavid or RNH I think he benefits from being in Edmonton. Now defensemen usually bring more than forwards in value but this seems to help both teams and could go straight up. If any thing needs to be added it's to Montreal's side. Now that can change in a month or so but in a whole season who knows.

I'm thinking right before the draft, I don't see either side entertaining this deal during the season.

As it stands right now I think it's close, but I do genuinely feel (based on what I bolded) that Montreal would probably have to add a midround pick, but it wouldn't necessarily have to be from the 2020 draft. Just a small bit of value to add.

Marc Bergevin isnt trying to trade Drouin. He'll wait another season before trading him. He have so much potential

He was at one point and Edmonton with McDavid or RNH would be his best bet to get back to that point. But I'm a Detroit fan and might not be up to date on either teams most recent needs.

Are you sure when was Mete signed? because Cap friendly has him entering his last season and waivers exempt.

Not now now, because we already have Mete Kulak Chiarot Reilly. So the chance MTL land another LHD are small. Drouin wont be trade this season
