Marner is a playmaker, Tarasenko a sniper. Do to is age, I'll take Marner before Tarasenko, but for ONE playoffs run, I'll take Tarasenko over Marner

Would you have had this opinion in December, when the Blues were playing lesser to the standard they finished the season?

Marner, but it’s closer than some might argue. I think Marner would have similar point totals to Tarasenko in a much lower event system like the Blues

I'm so glad this conversation came up because imho Tarasenko and Gaudreau are the best comparables to Marner for RFA wingers off ELC who have already signed in this CBA (Rantanen will be the best comparable but he hasnt signed yet)

The following is for the year before they signed their contract (2019 for Marner, 2016 for Gaudreau, and 2015 for Tarasenko)
Player G Pts Goals ranking for year Pts ranking for year Highest scoring player and their points
Marner 26 94 69th 11th Kucherov/128
Gaudreau 30 78 19th 6th Crosby/100
Tarasenko 37 73 5th 10th Kane/106

So he scored more points by a decent chunk and less goals. BUT scoring is up this year. When you compare him to the year he is in he comes across lower in place in the league than both of them in points and in a different stratosphere for goals.

Also check out who their centres were those years. No one in the stratosphere of Tavares.

Anyway they signed for
Gaudreau 6.75 for 6 years or 9.25% of the cap
Tarasenko 7.5 for 8 years or 10.27% of the cap

If we convert to the current cap we get...
7.5 million for 6 years
8.37 million for 8 years.

Marner is going to get an excellent contract compared to his peers no matter what he signs as he has apparently already turned down 10 million for 8 years...

I can’t believe you actually think Marner is a little better than Tarasenko. Most Blues fans who I’ve spoken to think the opposite because Vlad has won more cups!

Dude, why subtlety bash us Blues fans like that??? There are some knowledgeable Blues guys on this site and @STLBlues17 is one of them. Marner's tool box is built for the game Toronto plays. Tarasenko came up and was just a sniper originally. He's worked very hard on his defense, and it has shown. He approached complete player this past year, but he still has his old tendency to float sometimes. Berube has and will continue to knock that out of him. The kid in Toronto has mad skills, but he's going to have to work on his defensive game too if he wants to be in Mark Stone territory.

Thanks for responding, I am not bashing Blues fans. I am sure you and @STLBlues17 are both very knowledgeable, that’s why I said most and not all. I agree, Marner still has lots to learn before he establishes himself as the complete player Stone is.

Tarasenko is better than Marner in possession metrics and advanced stats.

Probably Letang, especially pre-cancer since you said "at (his) best." Complete defenseman. Buffy is strong but not complete.
