Going after Connor

Created by: CJBear71
Team: 2019-20 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 25, 2019
Published: Jul. 25, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
In theory, both Connor and Laine could be gone after with consecutive offer sheets once the season starts, and WPG would be in a difficult position. But that likely entails giving them both successive offer sheets with the maximum compensation (4-1st). This is to explore whether Detroit could get Connor with the 2nd level compensation (2-1sts, 1-2nd, and 1-3rd) by adding Taro Hirose in the trade. I'd consider offering Bertuzzi instead, but not Mantha, Athanasiou, Cholowski or Hronek.

This is to explore thoughts on the trade, not line combinations at this point.

Creating this trade so that it is the same as an offer sheet in the $8.5M - $10.5M (approx.) range, but Detroit can offer Taro Hirose as an inducement for the trade to go through.

I don't know. Kyle Connor is a really great player, and I got this idea after the Athletic published a story about an all-Michigan team based on current players. Their hypothetical top line was Connor-Larkin-DeBrincat. The last part of that line is impossible - no way Chicago ever lets him go. But Connor-Larkin is possible right now. Although this is the max I would give up. I wouldn't go 4-1st.

You gave up two lottery picks in the process. One of which could become Lafreniere. I get that adding Connor is an exciting idea but that team is still not a playoff team.

No need to offer a trade, Winnipeg will happily take the unprotected lottery picks while Detroit massively overpays for Connor via an offer sheet. No need to OS Laine first.

A good point - I realize it is a risk. But at the same time, you only get an 18.5% chance of getting the top pick at best, even if you are the worst team in the league. In return for two of those 18.5% chances, you get a proven 30+ goal scorer and 60-70 point player who is 22 years old.

With Connor on the Red Wings, I think the chances of them getting the 1st pick would be miniscule - this team would probably just miss the playoffs at worst. In fact, if Mantha, Athanasiou, and Bertuzzi can stay health and have good years, I think we are going to still be about a 10th place finisher in the conference. Unfortunately, I don't think we can make the playoffs without overhauling the defense and goaltending, and that will take some of these contracts to expire at the end of the season / be traded at the deadline.

Defense is still suspect and you are one Howard groin injury away from being a bottom 3 team again.

Hell no way i'm dealing both 2020 and 2021 1st round picks, As both picks are probably be lottery picks. And 2020 could possibly be Lafreniere no way i'm giving up that much for Kyle Connor. Would love to bring him home. But not at this cost.
