Just looking at Ryan's stats, for a first overall pick, they are REALLY under whelming. Last year was the first year he broke 60 points and finally showed flashes of why he was dafted first overall. BUTTTTTTTTTTT he was on Mcdavids wing nearly all season. So the question is, is RHN a failure as a number one overall pick?

He's right there with the best in his draft year and has done so on a terrible team for most of his career. I think a failure is far from accurate. I am not sure you can really say anything negative about him.

FYI he only spent about 1/3 of his 5v5 ice time with McDavid.

Other than that no he is not a failure. Not every top pick is going to be a generational player.

He hasnt lived up to being a number 1 overall but that doesnt make him a failure of a player.

Given that they could have had Zibanejad, Scheifele or Couturier I can see why you'd feel that way, but I don't think it's fair to say he's a failure because he is still really good.

Who would have guessed 58th overall would be the best player from that draft year

Right now you can say he wasn't the best player of the draft. However, I'd say he would still be a top 10 player so I wouldn't say he's a failure

@CapFriendlysFinest "BUTTTTTTTTTTT he was on Mcdavids wing nearly all season."

Not true at all.

They were on the ice together for just 376:03 at 5v5 last season, less than 1/3 of RNH's 1163:30 total.

I shouldnt have used the word failure cause hes obvs not! I was trying to get at the point that he has just been REALLY underwhelming since coming out of the gate.

Has it been the teams fault or has the player not lived up to the hype?

Not a failure. He's played on **** teams for his entire NHL career and still only 3 players from his draft have more total points than he does - and 2 of them were missed by every single team: Kucherov was drafted late in the 2nd round and Gaudreau in the 4th.

I don't think he's a failure and I don't think Edmonton made a mistake drafting him 1st overall.

He's not a bad player at all. He's just not a "First overall pick" type player. When you picture a first overall pick, you picture a player who dominates or controls the game. RNH isn't that, but he's a solid two player who puts up very respectable numbers. No way he's a failure though.

Now Yakupov found his way out of the league. THAT'S a failure. RNH is a top 6 player on pretty much any team.

The Caps had the two picks that were immediately before Kucherov and Palat were taken in that draft. I know we got a Cup and they haven't yet, but still, think how many more we could've got?

This is so true, yet something that most people miss. People slag the Oilers for getting 3 1st overalls in a row (2010, 11, 12) and not being able to create a wicked team - which is partly their fault - but then you have to look at the quality of those drafts, too. If they had won the prior 3 lotteries they would have Kane, Stamkos and Tavares to build around, the 3 before that produced Ovechkin, Crosby and Johnson. Pittsburgh drafted #2, #1 and #2 in those years and it set them up for probably 20 years. Not all drafts are created equal.

Timing. It's a thing.

The late '00/early '10 Oilers organisation is a failure I'd say. Every year having the 1st overall pick and just putting the guy in the lineup hoping it'd be a franchise altering player, they're lucky McDavid was the real deal cause they'd still be doing the same thing over and over again. Even with McDavid they now see that they need more than just 1st picks to get a winning team.
