This trade is just insane. KO victory for the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Edmonton GM reason for making this trade? We have Bouchard,Broberg in future seasons... so let's just giveaway everybody else for a late round draft pick, if there is any takers...
Now he is easily worth a 1st round draft pick... That's a good way to waste talent... looking at the Hall-Larsson trade... same thing here...

At least AA+Ennis good trades at TDL, if any of them resign, so that will cover some of the losses... that's why you don't make trades just to make trades...

It's not like this kid was a 1st rounder. Most likely he'll never play in the NHL. Guys like Will Butcher and Jimmy Vesey are the exception.

Oh boy how wrong you were

To be fair, it’s not like the Oilers has any choice about signing him. But it’s an amazing trade for the Pens.

Haha. I think I remember you saying that he was a lock to play in PIT this season, right, (ummm...)? The odds of a 6th rounder playing even one game in the NHL are probably less than 5%

Hindsight is great isn't it? It's not very often that an unknown player comes into the NHL and proves he belongs there. This is a 1 in 1000 move where that works.

Read where I said, "most likely." Nobody on this site, or anywhere else, could've possibly predicted Marino becoming a full-time NHL'er. Do you know how many 6th rounders in the last 5 years have become NHL regulars? 3 players: Bratt, Marino, & Gavrikov. That's 3 out of 150 picks or 2%. That means Marino had a 2% chance of making the NHL.

The reason Marino was 6th round pick was because he intended to go to be a college graduate and be a UFA similar to Fox and Vesey. Fox was 5th round pick by Calgary in hopes Fox would change his mind and leave college early. Marino's 6th round selection wasn't an indication of his talent

Maybe the NHL should look at that rule. Obviously, Fox would've been a 1st rounder if he'd been re-drafted in 2019. Top teams usually have a huge advantage in recruiting top NCAA prospects, right? Maybe instead of college graduates becoming UFA's, they should have to re-enter the Draft. Butcher, Marino, & Vesey would all have qualified.

Not only NCAA players have the right to delay entry into the NHL and therefore become UFAs but Junior players can also. It's an anti trust situation especially in US courts. The NHL won't be changing the rules because a few players seek free agency by this means. The NHL doesn't want to justify their draft and all the player restrictions behind it if it ever went to court. Players "need an out" from the draft, so the NHL and NHLPA are happy with the loophole.

That makes sense, but when you consider everything the league has done to facilitate competitive balance over the last decade or so, this sort of hurts. Most kids dont grow up dreaming of playing for Carolina or even Calgary, unless maybe they grew up in Alberta, lol.

plot twist: just wait until that 2021 6th round pick becomes a superstar and then everyone will change their mind and say EDM won this deal

wink

If I was 22 and facing 2 years in the minors I'd look at the age of the Oilers core and the Pens core and realise that by the time I make the league the Pens will be falling apart just when the Oilers are starting to make some noise...

who am I kidding - Marino just looked at the RHD depth chart and realized that he was buried alive in Edmonton. He obviously wants to turn pro this year and Edmonton couldn't accomodate. They also have unsigned RHD Kemp and Berglund who are better / have higher ceilings than Marino anyhow, so it's no loss to Edmonton to trade this kid.

good one!

Still a win for Edmonton. They got a 6th instead of nothing. Those were Holland's options.

No one expected him to be this good. Myself included. It’s just kinda funny how much he exceeded everyone’s expectations
