Is Johnson worth a late round pick

Created by: AlphaHockey65
Team: 2019-20 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 26, 2019
Published: Jul. 26, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Let's say Johnson has value and could be traded for something.

Ben Hutton isn't as bad as people say. His advanced stats are actually better than JJ and Gudbranson.
Check for yourself:
https://public.tableau.com/profile/christopher.turtoro#!/vizhome/2-yearA3ZPlayerComps/ComparisonDashboard

As much as I want to keep Gudbranson, saving that 4 mil allows us to extend Schultz beyond this season.
At the deadline, we trade for a RHD rental.
Pens would have $21.25 + 1-2 mil (if cap increases) to re-sign all free agents and RFAs.
Consertivately, let's say:
Murray gets 8 x 7-7.5
McCann gets 2 yrs x 2.50
Kahun gets 2 yrs x 2.75
Galchenyuk 6 yrs x 5.85
Simon 2 x 875k
Schultz 6 yrs x 6.5 mil
Maybe one small move for cap relief and you get to keep the top four D in tact, your future goalie etc.

JJ is worth a late rounder when you trade a 1st Rounder with him.

I agree but what if there was one team stupid enough to take on his contract (I highly doubt it) but a few on this site insist he has some value

You're kidding, right? A 1st to move 3.25M? He's a decent bottom pairing d-man, and while i agree they'd have to pay draft picks to move him, not a 1st.

Not worth anything to the Kings. I'd say negative value with his cap hit. JJ and a 2nd for a 4th or 5th maybe (with a swap of even prospects).

Its not 3.25M. Its 3.25M for 4 More Years when the player is already a liability. Think of the player JJ will be 2-3 years from now...

A lot of analysts say JJ does have value. The odds of getting a late round pick for him straight up is probably a 50/50 if you ask me.

As far as Schultz, I like Schultz as a player, but I think one of two things are true. Either A, he won't get the kind of payday you are thinking he will, or B he will ask for that payday and they will make the right choice of letting him walk. I wouldn't pay really big money on him. The reason for that, is although is offensive work is really good, he's not a top pair guy and he still needs to be sheltered defensively.
I don't think I'm the only one who feels that way.
As far as trading Gudbranson, you have to find someone capable of filling all his roles on the roster. They went out to get him, Big rig and Reaves for a reason. If you aren't replacing that you have to start asking yourself. What kind of dumb ass move will GMJR make next to bring that back to the roster and will it be any better? Because we all know that is exactly what will happen. I'd rather not see any more Reaves for 1sts trades and just leave Gudbranson Fing be already.

"He's a decent bottom pair dmen" again no he's not. He's horrible. He literally kills all offense. Malkin struggled so much when Johnson was out there because he couldn't move the puck. Honeslty if you think Johnson is "decent" you really need to pick a new sport

You might not have to pay much to get rid of him if Pittsburgh retains 50% of his salary.

Johnson + 3rd (50% retained)
LaDue + 7th

Don't disagree with JJ value if PIT retains 50%, but their cap situation doesn't allow them to have 1.625M of dead space for 4 years.

They already have $3.25M of dead space for 4 years. The way I see it they could plug in a prospect at entry-level salary and save around $750k of cap space each season without having a void on the blue line.

I agree they'll have to pay to move him but 3.25 isn't a huge amount ... I wouldn't give up a 1st to move him.
