Re-signing Dahlin

Created by: AudioCats
Team: 2021-22 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 26, 2019
Published: Jul. 26, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Assumes a modest raise in cap over two years.

McCabe 1yr left out of 3, signed 2019
Mitts 2yrs left out of 3, signed 2020
Montour 7yrs left out of 8, signed 2020
Olofsson 1yr left out of 2, signed 2020
Pilut 1yr left out of 2, signed 2020
Reinhart 7yrs left out of 8, signed 2020
Rodrigues 4yrs left out of 5, signed 2020

I assume Ullmark gets a 2yr deal in 2019, signs again 2021

I assume Roslovic shows some upward progression, capping at 40-50pts.

I hope Laaksonen, Samuelsson, Johnson & co. are ready to step up because I think we'll lose McCabe and Miller to UFA at the end of 2021-22. We need the space for Cozens, Mitts, and Olofsson.

I could be wrong, but I get the feeling Dahlin is the kind of player who will gladly take a little less $ because he isn't playing to get paid unlike guys like Nylander, Marner, etc. Totally depends on how the cap situation works and his own performance but lets say he gets 55-60 points this season and 60-70 the next, we could probably lock him up for 8 mil even though he would be worth 11 (comparable to Karlsson)

Pretty sure Seattle is going to help themselves on one of those nice d-men you've got there.

Will more than likely just make a deal so that doesn't happen

I think this season and next will inform what we do. If Jokiharju AND Pilut turn into legit top-4 guys, we'll have to make a deal. Having a young top-4 that are all modern, high IQ, offensive Dmen is godly and I'd give up a first+ to keep that in place. If one of them tail off, I won't mind losing that one/miller/McCabe and keep our picks instead. Laaksonen/Samuelsson/Borgen/Johnson are right around the corner too and one of them should come good.

I'd love that but I doubt it. If anything his agent (like all agents) will push for, at minimum if Dahlin is as you say he is, a slightly team-favoritable deal (~9m). But 8m is just not possible in my eyes. 10m is what I think he'll get but the term is really the big question mark. Could be 6 or 7 years.

If we want 8 years its gonna cost us.

I think he had just about the best year 18 season of any defensemen ever and if we want him to forego UFA for as long an 8 year deal would allow it's going to cost a ton of money

Also, players earning what they are worth isnt greed.

Expecting them to take less is greedy
