Marner Three Year Term

... and giving a slight increase to Marner based off of that tool and a three year term.

Aho's contract set the bar IMO. Even with Marner's camp crying for Matthews/Tavares "comparable" money, he just isn't worth that IMO. I do not think that Mitch Marner should be the highest paid winger in the NHL. He is a great player with an amazing skill set and a bright future who has won NOTHING yet. No individual awards and has not been past the first round with this group.

A three year deal would still make him a RFA when it expires and he gets the chance to prove himself worthy of a big raise when that time comes.

Since Panarin is a winger, it would take over $11,642,857 AAV to make Marner the highest paid winger. Personally I don't think he should get that much, but Aho signed for below market value. It's doubtful you'll see Marner or the other top RFAs signing that low. Marner, Rantanen, and Point will most likely all be in the 9.5 to 10.5 million range.

Aho contract is viewed as a joke by all GM's , players, fans and media so.....Aho is not a comparable. If that contract was a comparable than Tkachuck, Connor, Boeser and maybe Laine would have signed already for the same amount.

Unless a contract is for the full 8 years I'll be surprised if any of them break 10M aav.

Of course, I could be wrong, it happens all the time.

I'd say you have made a great point.

Players signing the 9+ million deals have won something or at least been in the league for a bit I.e. its 3rd contract.

Marner is coming off ELEC, has not won a damn thing.
He should be bridged and has to prove hes an elite player and not just a good player.

The cap number you are suggesting is perfect for 3 years.
If Marner wants more money, more term too.

9.5 million for 8 years seems okay to me.

Aho wasn't forced to sign that offer sheet, he chose to.
People can think whatever they want but the fact is Aho felt that offer sheet was fair and signed it. It's on paper and will be used to at least be used in some capacity to sign other RFA's.

Maybe the way contracts are being handed out is changing but to see overnight changes? People are in dream land if they think that's happening right this off season.

Aho's set a comparable for this rfa class whether they, their agents and the media like it or not.

Also, isn't Aho's agent also the agent for Point?

I don't know who is Point's agent.
You what bothers me about fans and media in general? It's this social media/instant gratification era where people want changes right away.
They don't think of the process it takes to get to said changes.

Just checked. Gerry Johansen does represent both Point and Aho. So, to your point about Aho signed his deal because he thought it was fair, well, you gotta think that his agent thought it was fair too..

And how much more does he think Point is worth vs Aho? Nothing astronomical I bet.. especially with Kucherov just starting his new deal after winning the Hart.

So, let's say Point comes in around the Kucherov deal. Are these RFAs just going to ignore Point and Aho as their comparables? They can try, but I can't imagine the GMs will

It's easier to just expect to he instantly gratified. The problem is it doesn't usually work like that, and then we end up disappointed instead of gratified.

laugh laugh So not only are you paying Marner $4 million under his asking price, You're also doing it on a 3 year bridge deal. No way in hell Marner takes that offer.

The key word here is "asking." Marner's asking price can be the league max if that's what he wants to ask for. Doesn't mean he's going to get it.
